The shop was getting a bit crowded as were the garage bays with all the wood I have stored in there. So, I decided to build a shed to store all the garden tools, lawn mower, tractor, tiller (and hopefully rough lumber) etc....

If it all works out, it will open up the 1st floor shop area (finishing room) and allow me to get the boat into one of the stalls.

I started with drawing this up:




I have a ton of cull lumber I got from Lowe's several months back and I am doing my best to utilize it. Most of it was PT with some normal dimensional lumber mixed in. I paid no more than $1 per board (not board foot) including the 6x6x12' timbers resting on the sonotubes. A dollar each

I had to buy cement and plywood so far. I have enough roofing shingles for half the roof and I have two of the needed windows too. All thanks to clearances at Lowe's.

I hope to complete it for less that $1500. Might even get it done for less than $1200 if a few other deals pan out.

This should really clean out some space for the lure making.

My 3 sons don't know it yet but the second floor area will be theirs. They've been asking for a tree house. This will be better (I hope).

NICE!!. You'll be suprised how fast it fills up. I built a small 8'x10' down by the dock about 6 years ago and now I am contemplating a bigger one, more of a small workshop like what you are building. Good Job.

Clear "A's" white cedar. Those squared and rebutted red cedar shingles are way too expensive for me....

We put a 12 x 36 addition on the back of the garage last year with them. We installed them, primed and painted them to match the rest of the garage.
On a previous house rehab, we used the same shingles but dip stained them before installation. It's what I plan on doing for this shed. It makes the shingle about as water tight as it can be. All of the exposed shingle including the backs are sealed. This allows for a tight fit without fear of cupping or curling. The tighter fit has a better look (unlike the back of this garage where we didn't do it).



As mentioned, the shed will get all the shingles dipped in stain before instalation. We hang them on a line with cloths pins to dry them nail them in place. Lots of extra work but it last forever. A mentor of mine in high school had done his house in this manner a decade before I met him and the looked like new back then. With coats of new stain every decade or so since, they still look almost new today. It's been 35 years....

Nice. I was trying to avoid the clothesline thing. I have a friend who did the same thing. He special ordered shingles from Maine, 5/4" thick at the bottom! He was building a new house and started the staining process before they laid the foundation.
What type of stain? Any brand loyalty?

I can't believe how many new ideas I get while reading this sight. Nice job on saving big bucks on your shed Jay. That is a great looking design and sure fits well with the rest of your estate. Thanks for sharing the pics. Bob

I've been pretty satisfied with all the Sherwin Williams paints/stains and I've used them as much as possible.
Benjamin Moore and lesser known Pratt & Lambert are my back-ups.

About 4 houses back I learned the lesson of using the Borg paints. Behr, although it gets good reports is junk as far as I am concerned. It fades and chalks in a very quick time. Tan turned to a light pinkish hue in two years. SW stayed true to it's color to this day. The Behr was painted over after 3 summers. The two paints were side by side on the rear of the house and we left it to see the results as long as we could stand it. The rate deterioration between the two was drastic. I'll never buy paint at Lowe's or HD again.

My house is rather small with three kids and 2 golden retrievers. We may at some point soon convert the garage shop into living space. At that point I'll likely build a larger version of this. I have a sloping lot on the left of the 3 acres and I hope to put a basement garage under the structure with the 1st floor as my new shop. The basement garage will be big enough to house the boat, car, truck and motorhome. Likely 40' by 48'.

I guess I haven't stopped by in a while...what like 3 weeks...and you already have a "new" building going up! So when is the indoor pool building going up? Goin' to attach it to the hottub house? Yup, It'll be an estate before long! Hell might as well put up a "hangar" for the motor home and boat! I'll also bring my boat up for indoor storage! Will try to stop by one day this week!
