Good morning.

Yes I rotate the rod in the lathe. I hold the brush to the rod and then move it from one end of the wrap to the other end. Let's say that is a north/south operation.

With the lathe not moving I run the brush across the wrap area, east/west operation, to feather out the paint and not have any peaks and valleys. Then I hand rotate the blank an 1/8 of a turn and go east/west again. I repeat this till I get back to the starting point.

You will get the whitest white and it looks sharp.

I have found that is you do this with other light colors find a flat paint the matches the thread as close as possible, maybe even a bit lighter in color.

Another way is to first apply a coat of finish to the wrap area. When I mix the finish I add white pigment I get from an auto body friend. This is a great way to change the color of a blank.
