Trolling-What Do Ya Want to Know

Ok Folks,
I mentioned in my spreader bar thread that we would post something on canyon trolling tactics. So, before we get started, this is a probe to get a feeling for what folks want to know.
For those who don?t know us, here is a bit about Reel Draggin? Tackle:
I come from a west coast commercial fishing family that dates back several generations. My firsthand offshore experience dates back over 25 years and covers the globe from the coasts of Sicily, Spain, Australia, Brazil; the California coast and for the last 8 years our focus has been the NE Atlantic Canyons, from the Norfolk to the Baltimore. We currently fish these NE canyons 12 to 18 times a year, mostly from a 23 foot Grady White Gulf Stream. About six of those trips are from several 46 to 50 foot Charters that allow us to test new tackle every year. We fit these guys out, so the feed back throughout the year is extensive and I will be glad to provide all of that information.

The big boats are nice but my passion is the challenge of successfully fishing the canyons from a truly small (but capable) boat.

This is a just a probe, so I know my audience and of course, I am humble to those who spend so many more hours of there lives in these areas. I learn and expect to learn something new every trip and every conversation with captins and mates of a boat of any size..

My answer, Everything.

I learned a long time ago that no one knows everything and even a seasoned captian like myself can learn a thing or two from anyone.

Seriously though I would like info on trolling the spreader bars, tips and techniques as well as picking spots to start fishing. Most of us only get offshore a few times a year due to cost, schedual, weather, etc. So what info can you give to a guy that will improve his chances when running offshore. I'm sure as this goes on I'll think of more stuff but this should get us started.

I would like to know a little about setting dredges, whether they work well for tuna and how to tie daisy chains

I would also like to know who uses unconventional lures and techniques - I had great success with trolling some fresh water lures and wondered who else has done anything "not by the book."

Hey guys: new here. I have a question. Is my boat big enough?

I have a new SeaPro 238 (24ft) walkaround with a Merc Verado 250 and a 125gallon gastank, GPS/VHF/Radar/PLB. I bought it this year and have been getting used to it by trolling, joyriding and fishing all around the lower Chesapeake Bay, including out to the CBBT/ocean several times.

I want to take my boat out off Virginia Beach 40-50 miles to catch king, wahoo, and hopefully some yellowfin. I'm not brave enough to go to the canyon. What do you guys think? I obviously always check the weather and I plan my trips. Is it really feasible to do this?

I know I'm going to get some comments about the single engine, but I wasn't convinced that new twin engines (same fuel source, same electrical system) provide much more of a safety factor than a new single engine, so I opted for lower weight and fuel efficiency.

I have the fishing gear, minus the actual lures, spreader bars, rigs. I have fished for tuna off Hatteras and Oregon Inlet about a dozen times and I've learned quite a bit. The captains and mates have even let me gaff the tuna a few times.

I know I've got alot to learn, but my main concern is the size of my boat.
