Mackeral thick in Newport....

I was at Goat Island yesterday, and there were pods of mackeral feeding all over the place. I snapped a picture, but it didn't come out that good. You can see a few of the small pods up on the surface past the gulls....

Today I drove up the causeway right around 1 pm, and the frenzy was insane. There was a huge seal feeding, along with tons of birds. There was one lonely soul at the top of the span, and he had a 5 gallon bucket overflowing with 6-9inch mackeral, and had just pulled up a rig filled with 4 squirming macks........ I stopped, asked the guy if I could cast his rig a few times, and dropped 6 on the sidewalk next to him in 2 quick casts.....I would have stayed, but I had a meeting.

Guess where I will be Sat. around 1 pm?

Went back today, with Pt. Jude Joe, scouting around. WE had one small pod getting worked by a few birds too far out. Just as we were leaving, a few big gulls dove hard just north of the causeway, and came up with macks in their beaks.

I jigged for over an hour and a half, but no takers. Figures when I show up they run scared

Nice day, and for sure the tinker macks are in the bay. Also saw a neat little 10 inch striper near the marina grill just suspended under the building, didn't move at all. Holdovers in the harbor already? Or was that his winter home?

It is going to be an early spring I think........

Buckies in the rivers soon, stripers on the West Wall.......Who is gonna get that first 15" fish in RI out front??? Holdovers inside don't count!

It has never been me, although I've tried many times over the years, someone else always posts a picture somewhere before me.
