| DEP extends ban on herring catches | | DEP extends ban on herring catches Mar. 29, 2007 - 7:21 AM
(Hartford-AP) The state Department of Environmental Protection has extended for another year, and possibly longer, its prohibition on the taking of alewives and blueback herring from most Connecticut waters.
The ban was initially imposed in April 2002, and extended each following year through 2006.
Environmental Commissioner Gina McCarthy extended the prohibition through March 31st, 2008. She says river herring populations have declined to historically low levels.
The herring species hatch in freshwater, migrate to the ocean to grow and return to freshwater to spawn.
River herring runs into Connecticut rivers and streams have numbered into the millions, but runs have been declining steadily since 1990.
DEP officials said the ban on the taking of river herring could extend beyond 2008.
