I have fished the Texas coast for years and what surprises me the most is how many boats overlook spots that are in close or not charted. Last summer I had great luck on Kings at about 10 miles out (first set of rigs 60ft). I would see many boats stop for a few minutes pull up and head out to the deeper rigs. My advice, Pay close attention to the fishfinder and do a good sweep of the rig before moving on. In the span of 3 days last July we caught Kings till we were tired all in the vicinity of one rig. However depending on the time of day etc, they might be bunched up close or spread out a 1/2 mile or so. Also they would be on different sides of the rig. In addition don't forget the subsea wellheads and piping which can create great habitat, again watch the fishfinder/sounder for washouts and structure. Try a slow troll or drift. And always chum. |
