Rookie Fly Guy

My wife bought me a 10 wt. reel for the 10wt. fly rod i bought 3yrs. ago.
It was a birhtday present from her ( i have a great wife)! So now ive got to set this thing up. Can I use braid for backing ? I plan on using it ocaasionally not constantly so is a wt. forward slow sinking line ok for all around inshore salt use? Should i have flies other than those that match bunker, mullet, etc.? I'm thinking clousers & deceivers. what's a banger? Thanks.

I am no fly expert but I have a few outfits. If you use braid it will be harder to control the line with you fingers if you get down that far but then again if you are down to the backing with a 10wt you aren't using your fingers that way anyhow.

I could think of a million wise cracks for this one but I would guess your refering to a Bob's Banger, a very popular and easy to tie popper. Along with decievers and clousers I like to fish flatwings ( like a deceiver) and surf candy's. Do you plan to tie your own flies?

You can use braid for backing, however I would not recommend it. I would start out with 30 lb. micron. It's a little more forgiving for a new fly fisherman. You also have less a chance of cutting yourself if you have the fortune of a fish taking you down to the backing.

Yes a slow sinking line is a good all around line. Have your shop put an 11 wt. Intermediate line on it. It's a good idea to upload by one for new flyfisherman. It will help you with your casting by making it easier to load the rod.

Bobs banger is a surface lure. I would only take this out if I see surface action. The best and only patterns you need are the ones that are proven time and time again. Top five flies for bass are The Clouser, Lefty's Deciever, Epoxys, Crease flies/Bobs Banger for surface action. There are many more. The first two I mentioned are proven and most of the patterns you will see are tied, based on them. Start with those two patterns and learn to present them well. They imitate almost anything that a fish will eat. Good luck and tight lines.

Thanks for all the input guys! No I'm not going to start tieing flys( I say that now HA!) . iwas thinking of braid because i just as of late becme aquainted with the Jerry Brown line and the hollow core is real nice. besides i was buying a bunch to spool up on the regular rods with mono top shots but I'll start out listening to the experienced flyers and use #30 mono. i'll let you know how i make out thanks again.:cool:

Not MONO, Micron. It is a dacron like line, easy on the fingers. Don't use mono.

DO NOT USE BRAID AS A BACKING.

A striper or blue that gets you into the backing is going to make a few very quick powerful runs. You will attempt to palm the real to slow him down and you will suffer a severe braid cut.

I have had pike take a run on me and the fly line left a burn on my hand -if it was braid I would have had to go see a surgeon.
