| Montauk Sportfishing Report 5/29/07 | | 5/29/07 Memorial Day weekend in Montauk. Mid day Sunday found the eastbound cars backed up to the Oceanside Motel, all the registers in the IGA were open and they were three and four deep, and the IGA ran out of Corona and my son who was out visiting had to settle for Budweiser.
The fishing is in top shape, even if the charters are not. The bass are plentiful, but the size keeps changing. One day the fish are 15 pounds or so, and the next they have to be measured, but there are plenty of them. Also a lot of bluefish. They got here before the bass, but now there’s a lot of them, although they can be avoided.
Fluke fishing is very good, even though the fluke eating isn’t so hot. There are some six and seven pound fish, along with a lot of borderline or smaller ones. Boats that have been putting in there time are bringing back a fair amount of keepers, but you might have to catch twenty or so for each one. The boats are now spread out all along the south side from the point back to town.
A while back there was a show on the Discovery Channel about a mega resort that was built somewhere in the Persian Gulf. It was a big island that from the air looked like a palm tree, with a mammoth hotel at the center. Well, the same guy that built that is in the process of buying Montauk, or at least part of it. He already bought the Panoramic down on the beach next to Gurneys and construction has been under way all winter. Now he is in the process of buying or has already bought the Yacht Club and Gosmans, and he apparently has some big plans. He wants to dredge the whole harbor to a depth of twenty feet, and spread all the material on the beach from the western jetty to Culloden, ending up with a three hundred foot wide beach. He wants to get the mega yachts that now visit Sag Harbor to be able to get to the yacht club. And apparently that is all just the beginning.
