Tuna Trip 6/10

Charlie Wade and I splashed the Tuna Meltdown in Scituate around 6 and ran aproxamatly 22 miles to the Northwest corner of Stellwagon. The ride out was alright with a mix of 2 to 4's just as Noaa predicted and the rader was essential with the fog lowering visibility two only about 200 yards in some places. We got to the corner at about 7 and the fog lifted and to my surprise we were in a fleet of about a hundred boats trolling everywhere. We stopped short of the fleet about a mile and decided to troll into them not to piss anyone off. We had an impresive six rod spread going off the stern of the 20' CC comprimised of 2-13" bars, 2-9" bird bars and 2 Daisy chains. Colors were Purple/black, Black, Green, and some pink. The Purple/Black was a big hit with monster stripers all day and we had a large fish (probobly a tuna) boil right behind it but he swung and missed it

. Lots of Whales, bait, birds, and a very large Basking shark. Total for the day= 3 stripers ( one pushing 40 pounds- ALL RELEASED), 2 Knock Downs, And the very large boil behind the Purple/Black bar. The further East we trolled the more weeds and other crap we found floating. Made trolling almost impossible you had to check rigs for weeds constantly.

excuse the stupid question but you caught Striped bass 22 miles ofshore while trolling for tuna?? I thought they were inshore fish, great report sounds like alot of traffic out there...tis the season

We get stripers regularly while trolling Stellwagon and alot of the inshore bluefin tuna grounds in Massachusetts. They are a pain the ass at some times and all must be RELASED because they are caught outside off 3 miles. But not nearly as bad as the bluefish that will show up real soon

Blue fish will have you re-rigging your entire days spread at the end of the day.

Stellwagen bank is loaded with bait that is what attracts all types of fish including striped bass but they are protected and you can't keep them in these waters and you also can't target them but if you are tuna fishing and they happen to hit thats different. there are some real monsters out there!!!

Not a Problem Captain Curt. I forgot the line was called the EEZ anyhow. Was that you aboard the MAXON Yesterday and if so that is a sweet ride. And Charlie said you were taken on a Nantucket Sleigh Ride!

I was out on Stellwagon and a lot of the same. Bait, whales, & boats. The weed was horrendous. There were patches 30X30 solid weed. Couldn't keep the baits clean at all. Wouldn't want to accidently drive through it. I headed south towards the BE bouy and the weed completely dissappeared. Found some whales a mile or so north of the bouy. Marked bait, but no fish. Conditions looked good. Water temp about 54.

Tuna Melt...You drove right behind me out there. Where are you out of?

You got me jealous just being out there. I've been stuck working on the house the past few weekends.

Are you fishing outriggers?? The reason I'm asking is I'm thinking of re-rigging my 18' taco's with double hayards and was wondering if pulling 4 bars with 9" squids would be possible?? We pulled 2 bars with very little bend in the poles last summer.

Edgewater I trailer my boat everywhere and launch it closest to the targeted places and fish I desire to catch. Some days its Scituate, or Sandwich, or Chatham.
Hoopa, it is definatly time to put away the striper gear. I have the taco 15' riggers and have them single rigged. This weekend I ran my two 13" bars for the riggers about 50' to 75' behind the boat. Next were the two 9" bird bars out of each corner about 30' to 45' back. Then I ran a 13" bird/daisey chain in the wash off the leaning post about 25' back an finally we ran a WTFB (way the F*^$ Back) Daisy chain of the t-top. That spread allows me to make really tight turns to stay on top of whales,bait,birds, and fish with out any major hassels. We also made this happen with only 2 people on board! The stripers were a good warm up but I want Sushi
