a little fathers day help.....

while i would love to spend saturday looking for BFT....i havent even put on my outriggers...nor have i broke out the spreader bars, tld 50s, or committed to blowing off work yet......

So i cant think of a better way to spend fathers day weekend...than taking my kiddies (5yr old boy and 3yr old girl) whale watching.....

Docked in Falmouth, i could run thru the canal and head to stellwagon or run off chatham....

Its supposed to be FAC out there on saturday....and so while i no many of you will be draggin the squid around lookin for charlie...i will be looking for moby....

Does anyone have a good read on where i might encounter some solid whale action to entertain some young minds.....

I will not have any tuna gear with me...and will respectfully move away from boats working an area if there is overlap....

thanks in advance for any help.....i figure in the next few weeks i will transition to bluefin and canyon runs.....maybe a shark trip or 2 as well....but in the mean time i am trying to keep out of the tuna game so my wife and kids still have a dad whose mind isnt completely consumed with charlie yet

It's a jump ball

The reports I'm getting say both are good bets. Maybe best to wait until last minute just to see the wind direction and then make your move.

If Stew's been out East i would call him and check out what CL has had to offer in terms of eye candy..

In any event enjoy your day

Murphy's law says that if you go looking for whales you will undoubtly find tuna nearby. I would rig the boat and do a combo trip. I know myself that I would never travel out unarmed when you know there are tuna around.
You can hunt Charlie and whales at the same time.

i hear ya...

believe me...its killin me to think about bein out there...seein tuna and not haven gear.....however...it is a long season with plenty of opportunities......

so....as much as my fishin mind is tellin me to rig up....the dad in me is tellin me that this proposed trip should be about the kiddies.....while my kids have taken to fishin....watchin d.a.d. set a spread and maybe reelin in a tuna is not as much fun for them as seein whales.....

from the moment a tuna trip is in the making...to loading the boat..to castin off the lines until im back on the dock...im utterly consumed with trackin and catchin charlie....my focus on one thing only....findin and foolin the fish....

I no myself too well....if i bring the gear...my focus will be (as much as i might fight it) on tuna not my kids....while theyre looking at whales and havin fun...i'll be watching the signs for BFT....thinkin of the smiles i'll miss...not worth it....

Ill get my chances...its a long season with plenty of tuna for all

nice idea but here are the variables I'd be considering:

You are right that this blow from the NE is supposed to lay down by Sat but you can be sure there will be plenty of swell pushing in for a few days if you go east of Chatham. How will the kids feel in 5-7' rollers?

There have been plenty of whales on Stelwagen but I haven't seen them bubble feeding yet, most of the bait has been holding deep. So the visuals are mostly of them 'logging' on the surface or coming up for air an showing the occasional fluke as they dive. The feeding behavior out east is typically much more visual and for whatever reason it seems they will breach much more frequently.

Lastly, if the winds do calm down as forecasted will you have to fight the famous Chatham springtime fogs? That would put a damper on the whale watch trip.

Hope it all comes together for a nice Father's Day trip!

You are a good man..

But just remember, when you go out without gear it will happen. A school of huge BFT will swim around the boat essentially eating enything you would throw at it. You are a good man, a better man than me

Don't forget that whales and tuna are often in the same place and feeding on the same bait. We've often caught tuna by finding the whales and trolling close to them.
