I agree!

We used to fish alot of tournaments before it was the thing to do. I haven't done it in about 3 years. I think they are having a negative effect on the region and the sport as a whole. They are a ball but need to be reworked to kill less fish. Just my opinion.

Anyone got any results from the boards?

"Capt Dom report"

Back from Star Island, where I was a hired Capt. on a new Wellcraft 40 Sportfish, Suivez Moi. The crew was comprised of 3 novices and 1 very experienced angler, but I felt very good about our chances, as my pre fishing yielded excellent results. I will say that this is my last Star Island , but I will do the Mako Mania as it is very fun. There were way too many undersized blue sharks brought in, too many googins around this year.....

Day 1

LUMPY start! We broke away from the field and ended up number 3 off the line, and left the field way behind(the owner is a former offshore speedboat racer) with the twin 540 cummins diesels. Unfortunately, he stared at the electronics the whole way out, and got himself a bit sick, as were the 2 other newbies. The starts are always hair raising, but very exciting nonetheless. We blasted to my intended destination, an educated guess mainly as I had no intel or sat shots. I had the water at 60 degrees to 62 from the week before, but when I showed, the water was 58.2 degrees and pretty lifeless. Decided to move around, and found a nice temp break from 57.9 to 59.8 with whales and dolphins, and plenty of bait. Set up our drift after a power chum of 1/4 mile, in 220 feet of water. Sea conditions were terrible to start, 3-5 footers with messed up tops. The drift was rather brisk, but the amount of life encouraging. Within 5 minutes, we had sharks around the boat. Blue dog heaven it was, and we started it off with a nice 100 pounder to warm up. It was just myself and Jay, the experienced crew member, along with Chris, who was game to be chum master despite being sick. We had at least 4-10 sharks in the slick near the boat all day, and were forced to play keep away while trying to hook quality sharks. We sight fished all day, never having more than one rod at the surface near the boat. All fish were fought on the small gear, 30 and 50 rods. We scaled down hooks to 9/0 as most of the sharks were peanuts. I hauled 6 sharks over the side by their tails one handed that were under 40 pounds, a good sign that there are plenty of juveniles around for future years to enjoy. The final tally was 31 blue sharks hooked and brought to wire, 26 lost hooks, and 4 runnoffs we never saw on the deep baits. Biggest shark we saw was very borderline at just around 8 foot fork, and skinny, probably under the 200 pound minimum, so no hang for us day 1. We were very dissappointed to see so many small sharks killed, but there were 2 nice threshers and 2 nice makos day 1. Thresher went 378 or so, and the mako was 362, Blue was won with a healthy 250 class fish. Very nice fish, especially with such cold water. I slept like a baby, after subduing over 30 sharks in an 8 hour timeframe. The seas calmed quite a bit in the afternoon, and the 3 sick crew were thankfully ready for the following day.

Day 2

Gave the troll a try for 3 hours, running along the 40 fathom line, and had trouble from the bluefish the whole time. Trolled till I found better water at 60.1 degrees, and set up shop in a completely different area. Started in 280 and drifted very nicely to 228 feet from 11am to 3 pm. We had much less activity from the blue dogs, and plenty of bluefish around, so we were very encouraged. No sharks showed up till 12:15, where we had a nice borderline blueshark, but let him go as we were not even sure he would make it, and we were holding out for a big fish. We had 2 small sharks around 30-50 pounds circling the chum for a good hour, while we only fished a very deep bait at 165 feet, as I marked 2 large fish at the bottom around 1 pm. The blue dogs were at least of better size, and the crew had a good time with a foul hooked 150 pounder that worked a guy to near collapse. The smaller sharks made a sudden exit, just as Mr. Mako made an appearance. Unfortunately he was in the 100 pound class....We managed to hook him, but he spit the hook on the second surface run, where he tail walked a bit and threw the hook back at us. Nice excitiment, but still no biggun. The time ran out on us, and as I hauled the deep line in very slowly, We had a very nice blue shark of conservative guess at over 250 follow the bait right to the boat and under it. With almost no time left for us to make the 40 mile jaunt back in, we managed to hook the beast only to lose him to the running gear. Dissapointing that we lost the fish, but the best shot we had at a money winner, as the biggest blue went 228 this day. THe crew was very grateful for my intel and prep work, as they all felt very good aboput their almost hanger, that would have certainly taken the blue division. A very nice day on the water, 5-10 out of the SSW all day. Water climbed to 63.5 at mid day, but was more from surface heating than anything else. Not much life other than a few pods of bait from time to time, but an excellent temp break and better quality fish for Day 2.

I was unimpressed with the lack of comraderie this year as well as a good number of bonehead crews that took sharks that weren't even eligible, or way too small. Great signs that the sharking is starting to heat up, lets hope them tuna follow closely behind!

Very exhausted, as I had a morning bass trip today. The fishing was very slow up the bay today.

Star Island Shark Pics

Why do they allow Blue skarks just to be killed and dumped in the trash?

Tell Anthony to get ready, I am gonna wear him out!! The tourney was fun, but the lack of experience amongst the crew hurt us, as did bad luck on day 2. Still, to hook so many sharks, as well as a mako, gotta say it was kick a$$ sharking at its finest.

We will scale down the gear for the smaller ones, but be ready for that biggun when it comes a callin. Looking forward to having you guys aboard again!!
