Thumbs up Another goal met for the 07 season

At the start of the 07 fishing season "Hoopa" and I set a few goals of thing we wanted to do. One of them was to catch a 100 lb tuna. Yesterday we met that one..

The past few weeks we have been Drydocked with the "Honey do lists" and have not wet a line in 3 weeks. Well with all of the reports coming in of TUNA out east and up on the bank, and Hoopa getting the tuna DT's we Desided we were going to take a day off of working around the houses and give it a go..

Plan was to have our buddy Chris "hardcore" Tankis, meet me and hoopa at Hoops house after work friday and head down the cape before dark.

Well when i got there at 6:30 Hoopa tells me HC Tankis is not going and bailed on us again but this time at the last minute (6:00PM that day)

But the good new was that if we did get on a fish it was going to be him or i on the rod. ( I can live with that)

Well we hooked up and off we go got down the cape and got there just about dark.

We still needed to spool hoopa's 2 30's and his 2 50's. Got done with them and hit the sack about 11:30. Set the alrm for 03:00 and slept like a baby for a whole 3 hours.

Hit the road around 03:30 and the plan was to head out east so we trailered down to bass river and splashed around 04:30

Forcast was 3 to 4 with a 10 to 15kt wind with 20mph gusts. We knew it was going to be a little sporty but manageable.

Lines went in about 6 miles east of CL with a few pods of birds working. Because of the bumpy water we desided to only put out a 5 rod spread 4 bars on the riggers and a cedar plug chain with splash bird down the middle in the WWB position.

There was a little chatter on the box including Capt Terry on "Riptide" but we did not hear of to much of anything going on first thing in the morning.

First hour went by with not even a bluefish. Then just like someone turned on a switch we were in the middle of a large pod of whale bubble feeding and breaching, just as it started the 50VSW went off screaming but would not pop the clip on the rigger. I grabed the rod and gave a few pulls but the clip would not release, so Chris pulled it in and released it by hand and the fight was on.

After chris poped the clip the fish slowed and it was a quick and steady retrieve. This fish only felt like a 30" fish and on a 50 that is a little fish so i did not even bother with a belt. But it was the first fish of the season so it was still good. However when i got this fish to with in about 50 feet of the boat it desided to show its true colors, and took off for the bottom the next 25 mins was spent fighting this fish strait up and down.

After 5 mins with out a belt and with this fish strait up and down and not moving i desided to put on the belt so i could still have kids some day. With some help from chris I had the belt on in just a few seconds and i was able to put alot more presure on this bad boy. 20 mins later a perfect gaff just behind the eye, a tail rope and over the rail, BAM!!! on the deck 67" of Bluefin tuna, first one of the season and personal best for hoopa and I.

Well needles to say we hooped and hollerd like a coupple of crazy fools for a few mins and i think about 5 or 6 high 5's and 10's were exchanged between the 2 of us.

Score BFT 0 - Hoopa & On The Edge 1

After all of the yelling a screaming we came to our sences and desided to put a tape on it. It measured out at 67" on the dot. The funny part of this is when we were measuring it hoopa had the 0 end at the head and i had story end at the tail. Well hoopa is telling me Keep going, all the way to the fork of the tail. I looked at him and said " I Can't I Am out Of Tape"
60" tape and a 67" fish Thats a Good problem

We cooled and bled the fish for a while and set the spread back out to see if we could raise another. We continued to work that area and About 10:30 we got another knock down on the same bar but after about 10 seconds POP the line parted, tuna and bar gone. Clean break above the bar in the brand new 10 hour old 50lb line. Bluefish maybe? A full inspection of the line after the 67" fish showed no marks at all..

About 11:00 we desided to head for the barn. We got back to bass river about 1:00 trailerd the boat and headed down to see my old buddy Eric at The Hook Up to get a weight and show him our results after taking his tuna class this past fall. Got there but he was not at the shop so his guy at the shop (Sorry i forgot his name) hung it and gave us a nice polaroid. 142 lbs.

We have been meaning to get down to Eric's shop for a few months now to do some shopping so while we were there we purchased a good fish bag and did a little looking around to see if we could find some squids to replace the color we lost.

Drove back to Plymouth and got a few more pics and while "Hoopa Cleaned The boat" Ha Ha No pun intended... I got the honors of cutting this big bastard up. Thats a lot of freaking fish man... Mamma is gonna love me...

So Saturday was a good day to be us. We landed a 150 pound tuna on one of the first bars hoopa rigged this winter and we out did our goal of 100 pounds and on our first trip of the season to boot.

I cant wait to see what the rest of the season will bring..

Hoop Next on the list is Mr. Mako

MAN I LOVE TO FISH

This one's for you hoop
