Shark trip 6/24 - south of horns

I went out on a brand new 42' silverton yesterday (as crew, not my boat). That's the second brand new 42 footer I've been out on in the last couple of weeks and I just can't get over the ride on those puppies. Nothing really slowed them down - not ferry wakes, or rip lines, or 2-3 chop or 3-4 swells. Boy, that's fishing literally in the lap of luxury.

Anyway, long story short, we drifted for a few hours due south without any real runoffs. Around mid-day, the wind shifted from north to west, and the bite began. We were once again into blue dogs for the remainder of the day, releasing something like 5-7 and dropping a fair number as well. Baits of choice were bluefish (they were swimming up the slick all day) and dogfish. Smallest was just a pup, largest was maybe 8 feet or so. Not a monster, but a good fight for a member of the crew who never fought a shark before.

Seas grew to a point where we decided to head in a little early. Still a fun day, but no dinner fare (again).

This thursday I'm off to block for the weekend. I think I'll be wishing I was on one of those 42 footers instead of my 25' parker. Most of the family will probably take the ferry. And so it goes.....

No tuna spotted. We didn't troll for any, but all that would have done is get our gear busted up by the ocean bluefish - they were big and they kept showing up.

I did hear one credible report of someone who trolled some up south of the horns, but that is the only one (they actually brought one back to the dock in the lower slot, they couldn't get any in the upper).

Hopefully they will show up soon. I'd love to shark all night and troll the couple of hours before sunrise to an hour or two after.
