6/26 Kirby's first tuna

Today I had Chris Kirby from MD up tto fish with me. Chris is a VERY regular sport and every time he come up we have a great time and catch fish to boot. Today we wanted to get Chris his first tuna ever. The bite out East seemed like the best shot so thats where we went.

We almost blew off the trip east due to wind in the forecast, but at 0600 things looked good and we headed out to Chatham. En route we ran into dead stopped traffic on Rt 6. A NASTY accident had the road blocked as Life Flight touched down on the roadway. We sat and ate homemade cookies for over an hour while the accident was cleared. So much for an early start.

We made it to Chatham and headed out. We planned to run long and try for a bite thats been a good distance from shore but has had better numbers of fish. We ran for a long time and never really found great water. We had some life, but it was not typical Chatham chaos with whales and birds and fish.

When we found the best we could we went lines in. For about an hour we troleld around bait pods with the odd whale in the area. Then out of the blue the left long rigger goes off. Chris is in his first tuna fight. He worked the fish hard and in 15 minutes he is no longer a tuna virgin!!!!

The fish taped out at 48" and was round as a butterball. We worked the rest of the day for another on but things were slow all around and the few other obats in the area all remarked how things had dropped off from past days.

Final tally for the day, one tuna (his first) and a dozen blues on the troll. Lure of choice, Offshore Inovation Green Monsta Bars!!!! I made a few up the night before and they worked great. The water was 200-400' deep and the fish came from around 320'. The temps were right at 60 degrees.

Overall not a big numbers day, but the main number was 1. As in the 1st tuna for Chris ever! He did a great job and now he wants one on spinning gear. He's ruined for life.

Down in Venice, Louissiana Reel Peace Charters has a ritual. they cut out the heart of tuna newbies and make them eat it then smear the blood on your face. Its actually really funny, my friend lost his lunch 2 minutes after consuming the heart
