Coastal Shark report 6/28

Had the 2 Faria brothers and their friend Pete from FL for some sharking today. The wind was pretty snotty today, and again I pulled up short of my destination, because we were getting pounded on the way out. headed ESE towards the Dump to start, and ended up stopping on a wreck I have near the 30 fathom curve instead. Marked a ton of life on the bottom, so decided to anchor up over it. The guys dropped a few jigs right away, while we got the slick going, and put 1 deep bait straight down on the down rigger line at 150 feet.

The first jig never made it to the bottom, as Mike came tight on a nice 15 pound pollock, which was quickly dispatched and thrown in the cooler, while Pete from FL also had a hookup, again on a jig. This time it was a very unhealthy looking blackish codfish, which we opted to live line, and we pulled up the deep bait after soaking it only a few minutes. A very nice 300 pound class blue shark followed the fillet bait right to the surface, and it was game on for the first shark of the day as it took no coaxing once the bait was stopped near the boat. Mike had the rod, and made quick work of the big male, and it was released with very little effort, the circle hook cut away right at the haywire and sure to rust out of the corner of his mouth in no time.

We got back to business of getting a good chum line, and the boys continued to drop down with jigs, occupying their time as it was slow for the next 2 hours. After the 3rd cod was released around 10am(the only action since the shark), we were beginning to wonder if we should move, when the live lined cod started doing the hurky jerky, and the rod doubled over....fish on! The first run was quick, but ended quickly, so I thought blue shark as no acrobatics or blistering run of mako, and not big enough for anything else really. Pete had the rod, and was moving the fish slightly from the dpeth it hit at when the fish decided to run to the surface on its own, and a mini thresher made a few desperate rolls and twists trying to free itself. This little bad boy was angry, but no match for the 50 wide. I unrolled him from the leader, and cut him away with care, to grow bigger for next time we meet....Fish was maybe 60 pounds, if that, but very colorful and a cool thing to see anyway..The next hour saw the tide switch, and 2 nice blue sharks in the 200 pound range made for good sport, but the seas were getting worse.

The wind was relentless and the sharking kind of slow, so we decided to head in and hopefully spot some BFT. We trolled through some decent 62 degree water, but had no knockdowns and didn't mark anything. Nice to see the bars swim for the first time behind me, but alas, no charlie...

Good day with Mike and Frank, good guys who fish with me every year, and a new friend Pete from FL, who promises to take me fishing this winter out of Tampa area. Back at it tommorrow morning.
