I took out a father and his 2 young boys for a late morning(8:00) trip on monday. Went right to 6 mile, where the fish have been thick for a few days. The group never fished saltwater before, so I decided to troll. Put out 2 umbrella rigs and started our first pass, within 2 min. both rods were bent, the 2 boys did all the fishing this day and were excited to see the 3 biggest fish they had ever caught, 2 10-11 lb. Blues and a 34" Bass. For the rest of the morning the 2 boys reeled in many bluefish to 12 lbs. and a few more bass, with only 2 more of the bass being keepers of about 30". The big bonus if the day was a Green Bonito that hit an unbrella rig in 45' of water.

A Bonito, sweet. Tasty fish, and a real nice plus for that type of trip.

MMM.....yeh Bonito is great eats......

Fuuny what umbrellas will produce......my friend Bob caught 3 Cod on umbrellas in one day while mating for his uncle......and they were all keepers, all caught at SE Light BI LOL. Right around the time the Great White was hanging around the island. He saw the White cruise right by the boat several times up close and personal right there at the SE Light while bass fishing

Those little bonita are indeed mighty tastey critters. Unfortunately they were vacationing in a hotel and and won't be able to eat it for a few days. It's to bad they couldn't throw it on the grill that night.

Interesting report since I have found six mile pretty quiet the last time I visited. How consistent has the bite been? Once we slide into fall I have a blast there with bass and way too many blues (diamond jigging), the switch over to the better fishing at six mile seems to vary from year to year - I think based on the amount of little bait we have around - this year we seem to have a ton of tiny bait (and why you got your bonito). JackC, 6 Mile has had fish on it almost everyday for the last 3 weeks, at least when I have been there when the current is moving. Action dies around slack during the day, but at night, good bass have been moving onto the reef around the tide change. It seems they are really only staging on a small portion of the structure, and that seems to change daily. Location, location, location is the name of the game lately.

Hi new guy here.Saw one school of bonita off Branford last week. We saw many many schools of taylor blues that evening.Thought it was another school of blues but saw one come out of the water. Tried hopkins to no avail. I still haven't caught one yet

Frogwop, Try 1 oz. deadly dicks, and work them very fast. So fast that the blues can't catch up to it. The tuna are much faster than blues.

Thanks for the update on Six Mile. Most years I take a many bass at that location. This year the bass fishing seems to be off. I gave Six Mile a fast visit last sunday (around 7 AM) and it was devoid of both bass and blues. (August daylight fishing for bass can be tough.) I'll get a few more fluke trips in and then target them. Jack
