I worked on a swordfish stick boat in the 70's. The iron on the stick was soft so when the fish rolled it would'nt lever out the lilly/dart. Swords are very soft,

Paint paddle can replace the tape

Good point sjog, I once tried Inconel pikes but after the first shot he rolled and tore a wicked hole. didn't even bend the pike. Went back to soft stainless (annealed) and mild steel. And instead of paint sticks I use a piece of tire about 1"x6" taped at the ends.
