I always question this kind of logic.....So we should only kill the very big ones, the fish that have already joined the breeding the cycle???
That would also decimate the stocks, by taking all the actively breeding females out, leaving no viable breeders in the stock.(a large female got that way with good genes, good fighting instincts, and luck, and is already passing on her genes in pups)
That logic won't work either, and seems more likely to result in a troubled fishery if you ask me, than responsibly taking a few smaller sharks each year.
Besides, The mako in question here was a male.
As far as effort by recreational sharkers, they spend more time on the water, spending lots of money, for the fewest fish harvested of any other type of recreational fishing in the US. The commercial fleets worldwide kill all the sharks, not the rec guys.
Spare your breathe here, and use that energy to fight the rest of the world. We play by the rules here, and the rest of the world laughs at us while killing all our fish.
