Report from 8/26

Left the dock at around 7am Sunday with one friend and headed down the bay in search of some topwater action and maybe some flukin...

Ran across 4 or 5 schools of blues between the Jamestown bridge and the mouth of the bay and caught some at each stop. All medium sized fish that were feeding on peanut bunker.

Continued South toward Pt. Judith and stumbled upon a huge school of adult menhaden about a mile off of Narragansett Beach and figured we were about to kill em'......We tried snagging a few and dropping them down and also tossed jigs and swimmers into the mix but all we got were more blues.

We decided to leave and continue the hunt for something better.... About a 1/2 mile further South we found what we were looking for. The ocean looked like it was boiling and the sound from the Bonito hammering the peanut bunker was incredible. As we looked around we saw 3 or 4 schools of fish feeding this same way pushing the bait fish from side to side and back and forth with amazing force. This continued for the next 2-3 hours and we had the schools all to ourselves.... Random Cruisers boats and blow boats passed by in amazement at what was occuring but no other fishing boats ever stopped.

We had about 50 shots directly into them but they were so keyed in on the bait it made it very tough. We switched it up and used everything I had to try and interest them. We tried everything from small jigs to medium jigs to Kastmasters, to deadly dicks, to yozuri swimmers, to storm shads, to even trolling swimmers......Very very finicky and picky fish! We managed to pull out just 6 Bonito and about 8 big ocean Blues. We had a blast watching this incredible display of nature though.

After it finally let up we decided to try some fluking. We fished about a mile NE of Pt Judith lighthouse in 70 feet of water. In about 2 hours we managed 4 fluke all just under 19" and 4 Jumbo Seabass to 20". After that we headed in.

Final Tally was about 15 Blues, 6 Bonito, 4 fluke, & 4 Sea Bass. (Didn't see a Striper all day)
Bait is absolutely everywhere......should be a great fall!

Conditions....Hazy, Light and Variable Winds, SST 68 degrees, Ebbing Tide

Good luck Everyone!

Brian, great report. We ran into a similar thing last weekend south of Block. I have never seen schools on Bonito so thick. They were very picky, but we managed a few and my dad got one on a fly rod. Here are some pictures of the bonito blitz, which doesn't do it any justice at all. I was too busy fishing the larger schools to take pictures. Looking forward to the long weekend, hopefully there will be some little tunny around.

Thanks gman. Fish was caught in Quepos, Costa Rica this past February. I battled him for one hour in the blazing sun with a light Penn spinning outfit....

Rover, thats exactly what we saw on Sunday. About 4 or 5 of those going on all at once but they were twice the size of that. With all this bait around hopefully the tuna will hang for a while. I did notice some bigger splashes mixed in here and there that definatley could have been small BFT as well. Look for a good False Core bite this fall too! I love this time of the year....Fishing is the best, the Pats are just beginning, and the Sox are making their push towards the playoffs....
