The Bat Guys – The Billfish Guys

What began as too many rescheduled canyon trips for Matt and The Bat Guys finished up with us asking if it all was real. I still don't believe what we did and how very very lucky and fortunate we all are. We departed Taylor's Point Marina on Weds morning under perfect conditions and forecasts. We took a top off at Menemsha and while there exchanged pleasantries with "My Dee Light" and crew. I had selected Veatch as our starting point and steaming south the atmospheric conditions must have been perfect for VHF communication. I could hear boats conversing just above the edge, boats on Crab Ledge and even said a fond hello to Captain Eric and the Tammy Rose. I must say having the ability to overhear conversations hours before arrival proved our turning point. After listening about a bite just north of West Atlantis I announced our change of plans and all were in. You could have water skied to the canyons it was that smooth with no wind and unlimited vis. We set up just above a fleet and met our first batch of weeds. Cappy Say had a tuna spread out and after a clearing or three it really didn't seem as advertised. One boat was chunking and holding them and reportedly doing extremely well...We dropped in and began a slow pick of nice YFT's but it was apparent we missed the hot action and began searching the periphery of the fleet.
Then it happened on a 30...why the smallest rod..
Not to use cliché’s but "screaming reel" "plaintiff wail", "Oh My God", "We Gettin Dumped" and Holly Chit we all repeated and the little reel simply vibrated from something special. In seconds most of the reels line had disappeared. Time to chase..... throttled the port side hard and spun the boat to put the line to starboard and the pointed Seaker to the fish for a run down. If you thought the reel made some noise from the initial run you shoulda heard what came from the pit when we throttled her up for the pursuit. When seconds seems like minutes and hours then finally the reel begins to slow down and the chaos switches back to our angler.....reel reel reel yells Cappy Say as I swing Seaker back to port a bit so I can see the line angle and assist the angler to regain precious line. The 30 has 90% of it's line gone and we still haven't seen the fish...Then with a mighty splash the crew yells MARLIN...MARLIN MARLIN...We regained bunches of line for Mike's first marlin and now we can swing the boat into a backin down mode and get more conventional...I thought we were gonna get cut off form one boat that would not acknowledge us on any working channel but he did get close enough to get my horn and some verbiage from this cappy...he left...After a great fight she finally gave into the constant pressure and Cappy Say was in his element with his peeps...Big Blue Girls..We removed the hooks and swam her till she kicked him hard. He now carries a GREAT BILL RASH

We went back on the troll without much activity and trolled south over the edge. Times we had to pull the spread as the weed was unfishable. Made some contact with friends and confirmed what we saw and that was little life visually or instrumentally. We made the decision to put out a hooskie lure and steamed back north to set up there for the evening. I was hoping for an east to west drift but got treated to a sw drift and all was good.

Sunset was one of those fabulous canyon settings

We had a nice hot meal and I racked out while Jay got the chunk bite started and the swordie rigs set. The hydroglow was going on and around 0300 Jay woke me and I went topside to fisn he had a gaffer mahi and one big chubby YFT with fresh baits out he crashed. Shortly thereafter something is messin around with a deep bait..Matt gets ready and I feel the rod...he's on ..he's off ...he back and Matt reels till tight and then gets a hard pull from his adversary. Matt thinks tuner and I'm bettin shark ....No long runs but heavy heavy pull ....we get deep color nope not a tuner...nope not a shark...a great pup swordie that fought real hard. We took him aboard for a quick picture removed the hook and set him free to grow and be a contender someday

We dropped another run off then predawn. Overnight we got covered up in what I can only describe as "London Fog" cold, wet, nasty, no vis what happened to us. I think Steven King was next door that kind of fog...not Chatham Fog this was Chatham Fog on steroids....

We trolled up the few miles we drifted to our last sign of life and Cappy Say set his predawn stuff..shortly into it we catch our first YFTof the day

The fog has begun to lift but would return later and we kept at it.

Then it happened...A lure got hammered..no doubt..ain't no tuner unless it's a big eye...on the 50 and it's smoking line....time to turn Seaker into pursuit mode....Hard over and throttle port side again push to starboard line is going off like I have never seen or heard...Everyone in the pit ....we’re getting spooled...I yell down hang on ...hang on....we get pointed at the fish and we are making time as we slowly close the gap so not to run over the fish..and we are in full fight mode...The gang has cleared the pit in record and I mean record time...we are working like a competitive team..not a charter...we have a red hulled express boat to our stern a ways off and a quick reach out with the radio brings back a great Captain...We advise we are into another huge blue marlin and ask for a perimeter to fight from. He's great makes a super hard turn and we can settle into a fight with spectators standing down giving us every courtesy anyone could ask for. This fight is different...This fish is huge, strong and determined...We get most of the lost line and have about 100 yards out when I turn Seaker stern to and begin backing down on the beautiful fish for the next hour...Our angler is into his first billfish and what a fish to get tied to....This fish is the toughest we have ever had the pleasure to battle with....We get up and down on her but we can't move her I keep changing the angle we pull from and that worked and got her off her game...She jumped again and now that she is high near the surface our confidence begins to rise...A few more turns and angles and finally a weary angler and the most gorgeous blue girl go into rest mode. Cappy Say leaders her gingerly

We get the hook out form the inside of her bill and begin a ten minute revival move that gets her back strong with great color

We trolled though some more fog and then pointed Seaker northward ...

Matt it took a while and a wait...

Three billfish, three guys each with their first, a VHF radio day from heaven, good friends at the edge, fog, sun, weeds, three different climates, two big blue marlin, a swordie, chubby yellow fins and some gaffer mahi...man I just want to stay in this dream....
