| 9/3 Good news / Bad news! TOday I had my first charter on the new boat. I was slated to do one the last 2 days but both days had lousey offshore forcasts so they got rescheduled. Today was an inshore trip for bonito and albies. Dispite the windy forecast we met at 0730 in Bourne and ran out into Buzzards Bay. The water was a mess with 20kt winds fighting the current making for some nasty seas. The good new is the new boat EATS 3-5's nicely. You can get a bit wet as in any open boat, but for ride quality this thing is a Caddy! We ran all over the bay and found a few pods of fish here and there. None were willing to eat and with the super fast drift in the building winds you only got a quick shot before we blew past them. By 1100 the bay was a real mess with winds bewing reported at 30-35 kts by several large sailboats. The 2-4's were now 4-6's and the tops were blowing off the waves. I decided to call the trip since the odds were dropping fast for us to catch anything and the fish when we could get on them were picky. Not a good combination. I told the guys to toss me a few bucks for gas and we'd reschedule. I didn't feel right charging them for a half day since the fishing and the weather were poor. I like these guys and I'd like to get them out on a good day and give them their moneys worth. I dropped the guys off and headed out to play with the new boat myself. I wanted to get a bit more wheel time in the big seas. I ran around a bit and once the tide turned the fish came up big time. Problem was the wind stayed screaming and the seas were getting REALLY big and ugly. I sloshed around in the white froth for about an hour and got about 6 casts into fish that still wouldn't eat (shy one bluefish). Finally I pulled the plug myself and ran in. I got the thrill of docking this thing on the upwind dock in 30kt winds solo. No easy task but it went well and I manage to grease it onto the trailer dispite ramp traffic. Final tally, NOTHING. A short trip with no fish. Not how I wanted to start my new boat mojo. On two short trips on the water, one being a shakedown run, I've managd 2 rat blues. Thats the bad news. The good news is all systems seem to be working well and this boat is an absolute animal. It is soft riding in the biggest seas. It's fast and it is HUGE! I was on the bow with the guys this morning and the fish popped up a ways off. I found myself JOGGING back to the console! Overall a tough day OTW in ANY size boat. At least this kept us ftom taking a beating while not catching fish. THe guys will be back soon and next time hopefully we can have a better outcome. |
