Hooked Bass (or not) & Tautog 9-23-07

Just my father and I yesterday, left the dock just after 5:30, with 6 or 7 snakes to try for some bass at some of our usual haunts. Also had a gallon and a half crabs to do some toggin after.

Headed over by Prudence......marked fish stacked up, but they were blues no doubt....especially after our first 2 snakes were quickly minced LOL. MOVE ON.........

Headed down to the house on the rocks, Kettle Bottom, Beavertail, Varnum, mouth of the Narrow, etc etc........more chop chop.

At Whale Rock, my father had a nice runoff, definitely not a blue, but the hook pulled.

Time for togs.

Headed to our usual spot in the Sound and found only 1 boat there drifting. We got anchored up and started fishing, but I knew I wasn't exactly where I wanted to be......after a few shit hits, I pulled and reset.

Got on the spot, but now the tide was dead. Took a while for the bite to turn on, once the tide changed. Then it finally switched from bringing up choggies to bringing up the RIGHT specie LOL.

Started out with smalls, most being 14"-15.5"

Finally put 2 in the box at 16" & 17". After more smalls, put another 2 in the box around the same size.

Lots of smalls right now!

Then the wind dropped out, and did a 270 on us and swung the boat around......OFF the spot....

We lost our bite once we moved off the rockpile. 2 tries and I got us back on, dead nut. In short order, put 2 more cookie cutters in the box after more smalls, and we were outta there with our limit and a nice fat bag of fillets

Not bad for an early trip....

BTW. we did lose a couple VERY nice fish.........there are big ones around, just not biting as much as the smalls........but watch out when they do, these fish are full of piss and vinegar right now!
