Cool Stinger Needle Offshore/Inshore

I know many of you must have seen the latest craze in offshore tuna fishing with jigs.... using stinger hooks. Well I know many people who throw wood lures to tuna. I've provided some to some commercial fishermen and I had an idea to combine the two into one: The Stinger Needle

Now I'm figuring they can be used inshore or offshore from tuna to striper. Notice I left the 350 pound stainless swivel in the belly incase anyone wan't to rig it conventional So what do you guys think??

Armand

It's mostly in response to the offshore tuna guys prodding. I've had of of my offshore wooden tuna lures take an 80# yellowfin this year and that was very cool to hear. But a lot of guys are starting to use wooden throw baits to busting tuna. I'm not gonna add this to the line-up for sure until a lot of testing has been done. It's just in the experimental stages and I'm just tossing the idea out there. I want to get a few into some offshore guys hands who do that type of fishing and maybe even to a striper fisherman or two to see how they like it.

I'm different from a lot of the builders who act like every new product idea is as top secret as the CIA. When I get an idea I put it out for feelers and see if people would be willing to give it a try. Not all the lures I put on line are part of my lineup. Many are just there to give ideas to some of the hobby builders. It may not be the best business strategy but it might help someone out.

Hi Armand,

You're right about the latest craze about throwing wood to busting Tunas. I think it's contageous . . . I don't feel right - I think I'm coming down with CastingtoTunaitis. At any rate, why not utilize the belly swivel like the Bluewater fellow explained in the "Rigging big wood for big fish Aussie style" thread. Bluewater - Articles - Fishing Articles - Assist Hook Rigging

Oh and I found a place in the US (so you don't have to send off to Australia for them) to get the Owner SJ 41 hooks. Angler's Pro Shop
Get those and the assist thread and you can rig your own. Of course all bets are off if there are a lot of bluefish around - with this rigging style.

best,

Bill

Bill I was looking at that thread with a lot of interest. I think the benefit of keeping the hooks that far foward is you will miss the blue fish on the front hook because they alwayse attack rear first. But bass attack the head and Tuna have already been taken with that style hook on a head but not on wood. I would do the hook up the way you showed if I had something that was tooth proof and flexible. Something lie a very fine SS chain or flexible cable.

Armand, I hear you on the bluefish attacking from the rear, all my old bluefish plugs have their butts chewed and mangled. Not sure what you mean by tuna not be taken on wood. Wood = wood plugs only? Tuna have certainly been taken on plugs in the CCBay.

As to the flexible cable or coated wire assist cord you should poke around on Randy Chins site where you can find stuff like this.

Goggle Anglers Pro Shop - for some reason I can't seem to paste in the URL.

Great information Bill on the assist cord. As for what I meant with tuna I meant that No one has used stinger hooks like this befor attached like a butterfly jig. I know that wood works great for tuna. I've had them taken on my wooden lures befor .

Thanks very much for the heads up on that powerflex! I'm goning to try and get some to do some R&D.
