| Extend Your Range- Fuel Bladders Hi All, A friend of mine from the Cape who's selling his boat has two 53 gal. diesel Flexible fuel bladders- that measure 27" x 63" with fittings- from West Marine for sale. | This is probably a stupid question but do you know if they can be used with gas??? I haven't reasearchd that brand yet.

| Bryan, These tanks are described in the West Marine catalog as 'diesel' only. There are more aromatic chemicals in gasoline that act as solvents when they come into contact with some materials... which I'd assume make these bladders more susceptable to breaking down. Also.. I don't know if I'd feel comfortable with 50 gallons of gasoline sloshing around on my deck. One little leak and you get to hear Jerry Lee Lewis's rendition of 'Great Balls of Fire.' |

| Like I said.......stupid question but....... My Parker holds just enough fuel for a trip to the edge and back but I would like a little wiggle room, been looking at a few options to extend range and some of these bladders are rated for gas. I have never seen one in person though. I also have a concern of the leaky ball of fire syndrome. My thought with the bladder would be to carry about 40 - 50 gal and burn it on the way out, the roll up the bladder and have a full tank to start fishin. Thanks Capt Bill

| Bryan, My Gulf Stream had a 150 gal tank and when we first ran it to the edge and back we were not sure just how much fuel we would burn. I got a 25 gal aux tank, strapped it in and off we went. I purchased a 6GPM fuel pump from an auto parts store mounted it in a tool box with about 15 feet of hose on both inlet/outlet sides of the pump. When we got offshore we did a fuel transfer and moved the empty tank to the bow before lines went in. It was a PITA, but it worked fine. There was no smoking on the boat when we had aux gas. After a bunch of trips to the edge and a fuel flow meter, we figured out how to keep the burn rate at about 14gph which kept the total burn to around 95 gallons a trip. The fuel pump was directly connected to the battery before departure, and the pump & switch were as far from the gas source as possible; we worried about sparks and fumes.
