Last year a mooring floated in that had apparently broken loose. It appeared to be rather new and likely somewhere in the $200 (guess) price range. No markings on it identifying owner or origin of original location. Rather unusual design; shoot me an email, if you, or someone you know might have lost it. If properly described in email, we can make arrangements to get it back to you. Found in the area of Mystic/Stonington, CT.

The owner of the lost mooring buoy was discovered. It turned out to be a local manufacturer who had actually lost one of their own buoys. Gilman Corporation located in Gilman CT (between Norwich and Colchester) 1(800) 622 3626. The owner Lisa Gilman informed me that this buoy had been one of 10 such buoys in the area in which it was lost. Very pleasant person to talk with, and they make a dam nice buoy for the price (my guess was off by $30) with an expected life of 12 years. They obviously do need some practice, however, in setting up ground tackle.

You do not know the half of it. I still have the buoy, Lisa did not ask for its return. If you go to the following web site you can see a picture of it:Mooring and Pick Up Buoys
It was the third picture from the left. How it was recovered is I dragged it up from the cove. Having a horizontal flat top it had collected muck on it. My garden hoses had been shut down for the winter, but my PH neutralizer filter (acid well) has to be back flushed every so often. Usually that does not work either in the winter because of frozen outdoor lines but two days ago, it had warmed up. After cleaning the top off, as I anticipated getting some emails and was looking closely for any identifiable marks, I noticed the manufacturer's name and telephone number (small print.) During the conversation, Lisa was not too concerned about the mooring but whether she would be able to find her ground tackle. When discussing what ground tackle was still attached to the buoy, I had jokingly mentioned there was 34 foot Bertram yacht still tied to it. She asked how did I know she had a Bertram yacht. I explained "snazzy moorings goes with snazzy yachts and the name Bertram always popped into my mind when yachts are discussed". I was, however, off in the length by one foot. When I asked Liz, if there were ten of your buoys in the area and yours was missing how do you know there might still not be another one of your moorings, a second one that had broken off. She exclaimed, "do not worry about it, we take care of our customers".
Why this buoy is so unusual is it has a about a three inch foam ring that runs around the top of the outer circumference. So it does not hold water it has built in scuppers for drainage. Liz explained that when one leaves, they can coil up their painter line on top of the buoy so it will not get slimy as most do when left to dangle in the water. Very well thought out design, not expensive for what one gets, and made in the USA not China, by a manufacturer who stands behind their products.

Now you can put a mooring out by your traps and leave a big anchor there. Won't have to worry about tying up and untying leaving an anchor etc. ;)
