Last week my fire dept was called out for an overturned canoe in a local lake at 5:15 in the afternoon. When our first responders got there they found one victim in two feet of water who could not stand up and walk. He sated is buddy just went under. We mobilzed 5 fire dept dive teams and the local P.D. divers and searched for three more hours with no luck. Finally had to call the search because the boats were icing up. The next day the county police, our dept and town police went back and recovered the body. He was found in seven feet of water, had he swam for thirty seconds longer he would have been in three feet and found.
These guys were fisherman who decided to go out in thirty degree weather and forty degree water temp. with no life jackets or safety gear. The dead man leaves behind a wife and four kids.
My point of posting this is to remind everyone how fast you can lose your life and how not using common sense can be dangerous. The first man was saved because someone got off jury duty early and stopped by the lake. He probably would have died of hypothermia if the guy had gone home instead. |
