| Downriggers in MOntauk Does anyone have experience using downriggers in Montauk for stripers. I don't see people using them, but have seen them used in other areas....i.e. Cheasapeake Bay etc. I am thinking of buying one and wonder why I don't see them in Montauk. |

| Oh well My guess is you don't see them because you don't need them. Not to be a wise a#^$ but I've been tring to cut back on the amount of stuff I put on the boat and not get hooked on the next best thing. Far be it for me to say what works for someone else. I would think if your going to motor thru bass cover you might not want a cannon ball hooked up to you rod holder. But what the hell do I know I like to shark fish I should save the $ and just eat the bait..LOL |

Use wire line for 10-60 feet or so, you can get down no problem with umbrellas, snapping wire, trolling swimmers, tube and worm, etc. The downrigger will get in the way. The lures have to run way behind them, and they will more than likely spook the fish, IMHO(who knows, I've never asked a striper what they scared of) The constant changes of depth would be a PITA unless you have someone there watching, or electric ones you can control from the helm easily. TYpically when stripers get deep, I employ other methods to catch them. Dropping bait down, or jigging works best. Not to say it wouldn't work, but seems alot of trouble to go through unnecessarily.

| Never been a fan of downriggers. Turns fishing into work. And with our "structured" bottom here in RI, adjusting them constantly can be a real PITA. There are some very expensive electric models that can be tied to your fishfinder and all controlled from there, including auto-adjusting......but $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ LOL I know one guy who uses them. Not for me tho.

| I salmon fished two years ago on Lake Ontario. They had a dozen lines off the back of the boat. Some on downriggers some on planers and some on dipsy divers. I like the dipsy divers the best and plan to use them in Long Island sound this summer.
