sharks east. L.I. sound

Does anyone know if sharks enter the area known as the race, where L.I.sound empties into the atlantic ocean? The water is certainly full of food for them. Has anyone ever tried to fish them in that area?

Going only back to the 1980's I can remember standing on the beach in Mattituck and seeing huge schools of porpoise two or three miles out. Back in the sixties my father, uncle and grandfather ran a fishing station out of Mattituck and they tell of a shark that surfaced next to the 16 ft boat they were in. The shark was altmost as big as the boat.My friends used to kid me about it, but if you knew my grandfather you would know that he hated fish stories.

So anyone know if its worth it?

I am sure there are, considering the volume of forage, but they'll be deep and tough to target in that area. I would imagine there are Brown Sharks there at least, if not some Blue Dogs as well on occasion.

Many years ago, as you know, Long Island Sound was a different place, and soo much has changed. I have never heard of any sharks being caught out there, but I know many folks who have had fish bitten in half, big fish, so it makes you wonder.

Oh yeah, love the avatar!!

Shark's were frequent visitors to LIS way back when.. especially Brown Sharks which actually were fished commercially. In the late 80's, it was definitely possible to catch these fish around Cornfield Point/Long Sand Shoal using a chunk of bluefish. 'Rosie's Hole' south of Fishers Island also had good numbers of sharks.. both brown and blue when their numbers were much higher. I've personally seen both species in LIS.. and, especially, off of Watch Hill, Misquamicut during years gone by.

Bill,

With the water the way it was last year off East Beach and that area, I wouldn't have been surprised at all if there were toothy critters in the neighborhood. Some folks were actually catching Mahi in the same area, not a 1/4 mile from the shore in late summer '07. That water was very green and warm, with a huge amount of bait and the normal predators. Granted, I didn't see any fins, but I thought about it alot when swimming that area for the latter part of last season, just based on how the water looked.

brown sharks

back in the late 70's and early 80's I caught some in New Haven harbor and outside the breakwaters. Did the sleigh ride thing in 16 foot brockways out of W00d's boathouse [Lighthouse Marina Boat livery].
Good fun as a kid. Even some fotos in the New Haven Register newspaper.

In 06 a local commercial Gill netter out of Branford got a 4 foot brown in his net right in branford harbor in 8 feet of water.

In 05 I I had a father son trip out in late august. it was right at dusk and the son about 10 years old was fighting a 9-10 pound blue. All hell broke loose about 50 feet off the stern. A blue shark grab the fish. it came in bitten in half. the shark circled a couple of time then was gone. it looked to be about a 6 footer. This happened about 1/4 mile south of the east wall.

In 2004 I caught a 5 1/2 foot blue shark behind Charles Island and a 4 footer in 2002 outside the breakwalls in Startford.
