| Tuna Question Will a tuna eat a small cod, haddock, Pollack, hake etc........ I know these are all bottom fish, but the thought crossed my mind when I was out fishing the other day............. I hear of them eating smaller fish such as herring, macks etc.......

| Good question Alloy. I don't think it is a size thing. GBFT feed on Bluefish but never heard of them targeting ground fish.. If i had to guess i would say no. but that is just a guess... Resaon being is tuna typicaly feed on oily fishes. But then again they do feed on sand eels. ![]() I am curious as well.. OK tuna guys any feedback?

| I was thinking more along the lines of tunoids feeding in the mid water column, and cod, haddock etc......are usually found closer to the bottom??? Who knows, but worth asking?

| I was on a charter with Canyon Runner 2 years ago late in the season and we we were having difficulty raising fish on the chunk. They did a deep drop in 500 feet of water and pulled up some small ground fish to use as live bait. |

| Well.. I can clearly remember filleting some cod taken off of Coxes Ledge in the late 80's.. and watching GBFT sucking down both the racks and guts as quick as we were tossing them overboard. Not the day to forget both the 130's and harpoon. Stuck some guts on one cod setup and watched it get spooled in record time! Some tuna anglers in MA Bay will jig up small cod to be used as 'livies.' If you put something in front of enough tuna...they'll eat it. Competition for food will often bring about a strike when chunking.. if a live bait is thrown into the mix. |

| Alloytoy, we usually use pollock on the lower set ups, and have had good luck with them, got one on that last year, cod have tried, never hooked up with one on, haddock never used, we did have a mud hake on there once, but it didn't live to long!! |

| I have caught Yellowfin and Bluefin on various "bottom fish " both in the Canyon and on the Inshore Tuna grounds... Those Hake or whatever the hell they are that you catch when on the bottom in the Canyon are pretty damn good baits ![]() |

| Alloytoy I Know Of Many Dragers Off Of Ri Coast Bringing Up Bottom Fish And Having Giants All Around Eating Everything Insight, Not Sure If They Target Bottom Fish For Food Or If Bottom Fish Is An Easy Meal As By Catch |
