vintage party boat pic

Jim,
April's additions to Mike's Maritime Memorabilia pages are a study in black and white photography, and include fifteen vintage photos of New Jersey and New York party fishing boats dating from 1890 to 1959.
You can see the entire April collection on our Just Added page.

This 1934 photo of the NANCY B. from Brooklyn, NY (complete with flying eagle) is in our April 2008 lineup.

The "NANCY B" was built in 1910 at Stratford, CT and was originally owned by Captain Charles Burton who sailed her from the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, NY. Captain Axel Lyons later purchased the "NANCY B" and continued to operate her from Canarsie. In 1922, Captain Lyons relocated the "NANCY B" to Manhattan, and in 1925, he moved to Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY. Captain Lyons was a member of the Sheepshead Bay Boat Owners Association (S.B.B.O.A.) and you can see the Association's pennant proudly flown on the forward mast. Photo courtesy of Phil Nuss.

We are now displaying more than 1,000 vintage photos of party fishing boats, fishing memorabilia, marinas, lightships, lighthouses and other interesting stuff from the New Jersey/New York saltwater fishing scene on our Mike's Maritime Memorabilia pages. We encourage you to browse these wonderful pictures and enjoy over 125 years of our fishing heritage.

Regards,

Dam, am I old! I went to the site and found the America and Chief going back to the fifties. I rode both of those boats out of Sheepshead Bay. I remember seeing a steel plate on the forecastle of the Chief. They told me it was where a 3" gun had been mounted. She was a converted WWII sub chaser. I went to high school with a kid whose father captained the White Eagle out of Carnise. He told me that during the winter, they would cut up galvanized garbage cans and attached them to the bow's cut water so the skim ice would not chew up their wooden hull. I thought those memories were lost forever; a very nice site for me to reminisce.

Old Montauk

I wish there were more on the boats out of Montauk is there any other site like Mels?. Lots of great memories from the 50's and 60's. I really enjoyed seeing some of George Glas's boats. I recall the first Helen (wooden hull) which was before he had the steel hull 50 footer. He painted one side of the old Helen's hull black and the other side white. Often led to confusion offshore believe me. The first year he had the red 50 foot steel hull Helen we were pulling up to Shark's Ledge off Block Island in the fog and heard something that sounded like a broken bell bouy. It was the Helen (brand new at the time) and his party was attempting to slap conger eels off and their leads were clanging on the steel hull. I also remember Les Marsh's Skipjack which later became (I think) the Gee Gee operated by Glen Gordon in Niantic. Great website thanks for posting it!
