Wait a few more nights....

The squid are here, but in small pods, and its hit or miss. I can confirm they are here, but it the run won't get going good for a few more nights.

John, you guys should be into them good , new moon phase with low light. The foggy nights are always my favorite.

I have a few openings at night in Hyannis, should anyone be interested in fishing for these fiesty critters.

Nada

Woke myself up out of a nice sound sleep to poke around again early this am, nothing for my efforts. Should have listened to my own advice, too early still....

Every year about now, squid seem to come into the commercial fisherman's dock here in Stonington. In addition, since I had previously worked in Newport for the navy, I know they catch squid off what was the two large navy piers just North of the Newport bridge. I am not sure of what the access would be for the old navy piers as while they are removed from the Navy War College and NUWC, there is still a checkpoint there. I never had a problem in getting to the piers because I had a badge, however, not sure what the situation is regarding access. Perhaps the checkpoint is manned only when a navy ship visits, but do not know for sure. The commercial Stonington dock is opened to anyone 24 hours a day. Strangely, I never fished for squid. Newport was just too far of a hike from Stonington to interest me, and usually when they start to run in Stonington, the draggers have already been nailing them. Since I fish commercially, when I sell my catch, more often than not, a dragger will be unloading squid and so I will just purchase say ten pounds of squid. Last year, the price ranged between $1.50 to $2.00 per pound. I would doubt if the price would ever get as low as $1.50 again because of the hike in fuel prices. I will follow the happenings in Newport on this post, and then check out the situation in Stonington. When they start to run in Newport, I have a gut feeling that there will be a time lag before they start to run in Stonington. One other item concerning squid: there are two different varieties that I know of which frequent our waters. They are called the long and short fin. Forgot which is which, but one is the is the common type everyone goes after, while the other variant is a strange looking squid. The best I could do to describe it is to say it looks like it has been on steroids. There is not much of a commercial market for it as nobody has been able to figure out how to prepare this really tough animal. When a dragger came in with several hundred pounds of this variety, I was able to buy a five gallon pail of them for $5. I wrapped the lot of them up in small packages for the freezer. While they might be of no use for human consumption, they worked out very well for bait.

Went squiddin near Goat island in Newport last night with Zero action. We took the boat and set up in line with the middle of the bridge while everyone else hung at the of the bridges. We relocated thinking that maybe the end of the bridge is where we needed to be again zero action. We never heard of any catches in the 3 hours we worked the area my son did notice that it might not be the right time yet because everyone on the bridge spoke English. That’s a good sign to take head in next time.
