| CR Commercial fishing 1.2 million pounds of Sailfish meat passed through the Costa Rican Fish Wholesalers in 2006… The group that regulates commercial fishing in Costa Rica is INCOPESCA. They recently had the legal limit of Sailfish that long-line fishing boats may keep raised to 15% of their total catch. Now…The want to increase that to 25% of total catch and allow 35% in the months of January through April…the high season for Sailfish. They are targeting Sailfish as a commercial fish. Other Central American countries have realized the value of Sailfish to their economy as a sport fish and prohibit commercial fishing for them. If you are a captain or fisherman it’s time to speak up. Please take 5 minutes and send a mail encouraging the Costa Rican government to prohibit the commercial fishing of Sailfish and Marlin. A Sailfish that can be caught and released numerous times is better for the Costa Rican economy than a Sailfish that is ground up into dog food! | Thanks for posting. Curious if there is any information, stating what the economic benfit would be for charter fishing sails/marlin vs. commercial fishing?

| I sent my letter of dismay to President Arias yesterday: 30 April 2008 Mr. Oscar Arias, President of Costa Rica Attn: Honorable Laura Solis Fax: #011-506-2253-9078 Dear President Arias, As a long-time supporter of sportfishing in Costa Rica, I am dismayed to learn that INCOPESCA recently increased the allowable catch of sailfish and marlin by commercial long liners an additional 15%, and is trying to increase this to 25% - 35%. I am writing to beg you to end ALL commercial harvest of sailfish and marlin in Costa Rican waters. We have been promoting sport fishing in Costa Rica since 1968 and have sent thousands of anglers to your country during this time. Over the past 20 years, we have witnessed a precipitous decline in the numbers of billfish. Likewise, the numbers of anglers we send to Costa Rica is but a fraction of the volume we sent 10 years ago, despite wonderful “new” fishing resorts like Los Sueños have been constructed. Other Central American countries have realized the value to their economy that the international angler brings. Guatemala has outlawed all commercial harvest of billfish and Sportfishing there has improved dramatically in recent years. Unfortunately for Costa Rica, the number of international anglers traveling to Guatemala has increased exponentially as a result. A sport-caught billfish is usually a released billfish, making it a renewable resource. Not only is it freed to spawn and sustain the species, but it can be caught and released many times during its life span. The average group of four anglers injects $9-10,000 US into your economy. Certainly, a live billfish swimming in Costa Rican waters attracts an international clientele and generating this kind of revenue into the economy is worth far more than pet food. I urgently ask you to please outlaw all commercial harvest of billfish in Costa Rica. Sincerely, A. M. Schaefer Senior Agent I would hope the international community on these forums will follow suit.

| Oops meant Sail Fish..........interesting stuff there thanks for posting. We caugfht them in the Keys and the Capt. didn't even want to bring them in the boat due to stressing the fish...........
