Engine Question

I have a 2004 Yamaha F225 motor with about 600 hours on it. I have done all the regular maintenance every hundred hours and have not had any issues with the motor at all.

This year when i launched the boat after sitting all winter, I immediatley noticed that it was making a strange noise but only at idle. It sounds like a continuous mild winding sound....but as soon as you put the boat into gear this noise goes away completley and the motor is back to its quiet old self and is jumping up on plain and performing well at all RPM's....

Then you put the boat back in neutral and the noise is back again. Almost sounds like a belt noise or something just rubbing up against itself.

I was told to run it a few times before i get too concerned but i just figured i would ask you guys if you had any ideas or suggestions. If there is something wrong I would like to address it now before things really get going.

Also, I was out riding around the bay all morning from Greenwich Bay, to the Providence river to all around Prudence Island. Ran into one school of pogies but never did see any Bass on the surface the entire time. It was quite chilly out there today. I knew that it was too good to be true last weekend with schoolies everywhere two seconds from my dock. Some funny weather we had this week though and it was blowing out of the East all morning....

Albatross, there is a rubber bushing that sometimes gets dried out. This may be it? Or is the noise under the cowling?

The rubber bushing I'm talking about is in the front of the lower (bottom) cowling up underneath. Hard to explain, but just look in the area where the drive shaft goes down to wards the lower unit, and where the steering arm comes off the motor.

A quick shot of silicone spray and it may silent the noise. Did it a few times on my F150.......

Albatross, I have an F250 and had it make that same sound you are describing a few different times, always seemed to go away on its own. I wondered what it was also. Engine always performed well and sound went away so never was too concerned. Interesting to hear it from someone else. Be curious to hear some more feedback.

Pretty common with Yamaha 4 strokes

Thanks for posting that Alloy. I will give that a try. I have had a squeling/screatching noise in the past and greased the cowling area and it went away. This is a different noise than that though and it is tough to pin point exactly where it is even coming from. But it is continuous and only at idle for some reason....

I hate not being mechanically inclined. Really blows sometimes.

No problem Albatross, I hope it takes care of the noise for you.......I used silicone spray by CRC, and it hasn't come back since on my motor..........

I have a 2004 YammaMerc F225 and if the noise is a squeeking or squeel at idle it is a known issue and is caused by the drive shaft rubbing on a rubber mounted bushing in the exhaust housing right above the water pump. I had the bushing replaced because a new part was supposed to eliminate this but it still makes a noise. It is nothing to worry about and is an inconvenience and needs no action. I also pull my lower unit off in the winter to grease the splines and impeller change every other year and also grease the shaft and bushing with Merc 101 grease which clears up the noise for a while but it will return. I am willing to live with the noise knowing that it is nothing to worry about. Hope this info helps.

Heh, this wouldn't have been an issue back when we were running the '83 200 Black Max Merc

Plain old wouldn't have ever been able to hear a noise like that

Here is the drive shaft bushing which is the source of low RPM squeel common to the F series Yamaha 4 strokes. Grease helps for a while, but we just have to live with it.
