Just got back from the Stonington Commercial dock. Arrived at 8 pm. About a dozen fishermen were squidding. Several propane lanterns, two generators, and very poor action. Most, like myself caught naught, one Asian landed three or four but I did not see more than a total of 6 squid landed within one and half hours I was there. Very pleasant evening and a nice chat with a co-angler; would have stayed longer but Scup's worn out internal plumbing dictated otherwise. Still am not convinced that buying the squid would not be far more cost effective. The angler I was chatting with informed me that one day last week an angler left with 1/2 bucket of squid. The halogen lights drew several species of bait to the surface. Pretty sure the main body was grass shrimp, with what appeared to be Spearing working just below the shrimp. While I do not know exactly what they are, there were plenty of worm like creatures with red heads swimming about. I have caught these swimming worms previously in a dip net, but have no idea of what they will ever grow up into. Very fragile and will break apart in your fingers. All in all, I would consider tonights visit to the dock pleasant, but totally unproductive.
