I have heard that noise in the past and have greased that area and the noise went away.

This is something different......It is a continuous winding noise that is only happening when the boat is in neutral. It is very noticeable and as soon as you put it in gear - forward or reverse the noise is gone.

I ran the boat pretty hard over the weekend and it ran great. Every time you put it back in neutral the noise was back though. I appreciate the help here guys!

Albatross, have you removed the plastic protective cover over the top of the engine and inspected the valve drive belt and idler/tensioner pulley for wear. My Merc owners manual calls for belt replacement at 4 yrs./ 400 hours. I am due for a replacement this year and my mechanic says to replace the idler at the same time. That pulley has a sealed bearing and could squeel if worn and not under load at neutral. Just a suggestion. To replace this belt the flywheel has to be removed, not my kind of job.

I did remove the cover and the noise does seem to be coming from the flywheel area. I think I am going to make an appt. and have them check it out. I think you may be right on with this Orion...... I have never replaced any of the belts. It may be time.....

Albatross, Have them give you the old belt as a spare. Never know you may be out and blow a belt.

I believe that these engines are of the interference type where if you loose the drive belt for any reason the pistons collide with the valves and the repair costs probably exceed the worth of the engine. Thats why my belt is going to be replaced this year. I could be wrong on this but to get all that power out of this block it probably is necessary.

orion, I've heard of that with the first generation Honda's but never on a the Yamaha's. That's an interesting point.

The F225 is a non-interferance engine. If the belt goes, the engine will just shut off.

Plain old wouldn't have ever been able to hear a noise like that

Like my annoying prop rattle running a stainless prop. Can't hear it if the motor is loud enough but it isn't loud enough.
