You are supposed to keep a few hundred feet off them, 500 yards for right whales. So you move into a legal safe position but what happens is they often work the bait in large circles. You could move in on them when they are 200' away but their circle runs right under your boat (that 200' is the far side of their circle). Then you get
very close shows.
People have had them scratch their backs on the hulls of the boat. On this day I had to back off several times to keep a safe distance, like after this tail splash. We were watching them much further off, then he dove and came up here. There was another boat there as well and I can't say they were as prudent. I always leave the enigne running to let them know where I am. Don't know if that really works but I do it anyhow
