Montauk Sportfishing Final Report

12/18/06
Well, it?s all over but the shouting, although it isn?t really very noisy. The bass fishing from November until the season closed last Friday was kind of disappointing. A lot of small fish early in that period, followed by lots and lots of herring followed by some nice sized bass, but not a lot of them. It wasn?t what you remember from years past when there were birds and bass all over the place. This year it seemed like there were small schools of bass that attacked the herring for maybe a minute and then were gone. There were some real good days, but mostly just OK days.
The MBCA?s fall bass tournament ended with a little glitch, when first place was awarded to the second biggest fish instead of the biggest. It?s all been starightened out though by paying the real winner as well. It cost the Association an extra $1500, but it was the right thing to do.
1st place - Vivienne - 49.2 lbs ( I haven?t got the anglers name)
2nd place - Phil Haley - Sea Otter - 49.0 lbs
3rd place - Bill Teemasma - Herl?s Girl - 48.7 lbs
4th place - Rob Rosen - Fisherman II - 47.25 lbs
East Hampton?s Locals Surfcasting Tournament only had one change from early November; Griffin Kim snuck into second place in the kids division.
1st Place waders - Phil Siegal - 37.32 lbs
2nd Place waders - Gary Arprea - 35.62 lbs
3rd Place waders - Gary Arprea - 28.58 lbs
1st Place wetsuit - Mike Milano - 43.78 lbs
2nd place wetsuit - John Bruno - 35.40 lbs
1st Place kids - Amanda Schrudel - 9.6 lbs
2nd Place kids - Griffin Kim - 9.56 lbs
3rd Place kids - Dillon Lackner - 8.76 lbs
1st Place youth - Ben McCarron - 16.2 lbs
2nd Place youth - Mike Strek - 15.08 lbs
3rd Place youth - Joe Hodnik - 11.2 lbs
1st Place ladies - Cheryl Lackner - 16.74 lbs
2nd Place ladies - Loretta Sears - 14.88 lbs
3rd Place ladies - Mary Ellen Kane - 14.06 lbs
That?s it for this year. Have a great holiday and winter, and I?ll see you in the Spring.
