| Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel As an introduction, the bay bridge tunnel is a 17 mile structure that goes from the VA eastern shore to Virginia Beach, VA. It is at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and the largest fish holding structure on the bay. Because of it's location at this time of the year it is the best on the east coast to fish for stripers. All the stripers from the north in the ocean migrate past it on the way to NC and all the stripers that migrate out of the Chesapeake pass by it. It a nutshell, it is the place to be. Last weekend, myself and three of my fishing buddies headed down for three days of fishing on my 23' Sea Hunt CC. We are all confirned light tackle guys, no broomsticks and 40# line for us. Shimano 2500's with 10# braided line and 6"med. action rods are the tackle of choice. We started on Friday casting jigs around the bridge piling and different structure around the bridge. Never had any serious schools of bait or fish show up so we had to stick with structure. Ended the day catching about 100 fish to 39", 20#, and several nice blues to 13#. Sat was a different story with a big school of bunker showing up and the stripers and blues followed. For several hours we caught 30" stripers and 30+" blues. The largest of the day was a 36", 21#, striper caught on a flyrod. Again we caught somewhere around 100 fish. Now Sunday rolls around and it turns out to be one of those days we dream about. Headed out at first light and we were greeted by miles of diving gannets and sea gulls. For the next 4 hours the four of us caught striper after striper from 30-36" and blue after blue from 10-13#. I won't even try guess at the # of fish we caught and you probably won't believe me if I did. Let's just say that until you experience this fishery at it's best in person, it will all be fish tales. | Hi Jack....agree the fishing is great there. Had brothers in the military and travelled it often on way to Norfolk. But transiting the bridge got me claustrophobic once, it appeared to be leaking in the tunnel, :confused1: :confused1: :confused1: Is it true it was engineered that way to release pressure? Anybody know? The gannets and seagulls there have it made LOL  |
