Manta, Ecuador Fishing Report September 1-5-2010

The fishing continues to produce results nothing short of incredible. The last week has had some new additions such as big eye tuna, striped and sailfish which were virtually absent in our last report. The seas were pretty calm most of the week.
September 1, 2010 waters were quite calm with 2 to 3 foot seas and overcast skies. Water temperature was near 77 F. Two boats reported fishing 28 miles from port. The first boat raised 6 blue marlin and 1 stripey. They caught 2 blues and a striped marlin. The second boat reported raising 3 blues and not catching any. The tally was 10 marlin raised with 3 caught between 2 boats.
September 2, 2010 the seas continued to be less than 3 feet and skies were overcast. 1 boat reported fishing 30 miles from port. Water was a grey blue color and there was plenty of bait. They claimed raising 5 blue marlin and catching a few small dorado. They released 1 blue estimated around 300lb.
September 4, 2010 the waters continued to be very pleasant with ocean temperatures 76 to 77 all day. Water color and a bait were said to be excellent and 10 boats headed about 30 miles out of port. Dolphins and some whales were seen. La Guara owned by angler Jaime Nebot caught a big eye tuna of 262 lbs, 1 striped marlin and a blue. They lost 2 stripes and 2 blue after shorts fights and managed to raise a total 7 marlin. La Choca armed with angler Ramon Velasquez reported raising 4 blues and 2 striped marlin with 2 blues caught. Don Chuma and angler Fernando Mata reported raising 2 blue and 2 stripes with one blue caught. Florimar had a mixed bag with 6 blue marlin raised, 3 stripes and 3 sailfish with 1 blue, 1 stripey and 1 sailfish caught. Blue Fin with angler Wang Chang raised 1 blue and caught a 362 lb big eye tuna. All together there were 10 boats fishing that raised an estimated 54 blues, 22 stripes and 6 sailfish. By all accounts very good day to be on the water. Most blues were under 400lb with 4 females estimated over 600lb lost this day.
September 5, 2010 another calm day of fishing was met with some current changes and green water moving in. The fishing slowed down a bit but 8 of the boats on the water all experienced marlin action. Don Chuma raised 2 stripes and caught 1 with no blues reported. La Choca experienced raising 4 blues, caught 1 and lost 2 more. Isabela caught a blue around 300lb and lost another estimated over 500lb. Blue Fin caught a blue and lost another. Amalita raised 6 caught 1 blue, lost 4 more and caught 1 stripey. La Guara raised 2 blue and caught 1. Robalo reported raising 3 blues and catching 1. I was not able to get the report from the 8th boat. Over 30 marlin estimated raised between blue and stripes. This is still arguably a very good day.
Folks as you can tell by our latest report the fishing continues to be strong in Manta. Year after year Manta is becoming well respected by local sportsmen yet is still laid back enough that is has been kept under the international radar. Our business is to promote and provide the best marlin fishing found in South America. We feel Manta is one of South America’s latest hotspots.

My Labor Day bear hunt was a huge success. I hunted in Campton,NH, not very far from Lincoln, where my brother and I stayed for the moose hunt in 2007. After 45 minutes (3:45) in the stand a bear sneaked in and lay down on the pile of sunflower seeds. I kept trying to judge it's size and must have taken the safety on and off at least 2 dozen times. It's tough to judge from up in the stand, but my guide Dave said there was a 300+ pounder in the area with a white diamond patch, so I decided to wait that one out. That first bear ambled off at about 4:25. A bigger bear came in at about 4:30, but stayed concealed behind cover. I could tell it was a big bear because I could see the paws and make out the head and snout from time to time. That sucker lay down on the sunflower seeds for over an hour. At 5:35 or so, the bear got up and left the way it came, not giving any shot opportunity after a long wait. I don't know if that same bear came back around to hit the bait barrel, or if it was a different bear, but at about 5:45, the sow came out and there was no doubt she was a decent bear. She gave me a perfect broadside shot and I took it. She tumbled over and went stiff for a second, but then she got up and charged off out of view with a couple huge bounds. I called my guide, Dave and he showed up with his tracker buddy and a quad. They asked me if I felt confident of a good shot and I said, "absolutely". That illuminated reticle is AWESOME and shined like a beacon on the bears shoulder! Anywho, I say, "let's go see if there's any blood". So we go over and there's no blood or anything. The guide and the tracker start following what they thought was where she crashed off. As they're looking, I see a big ball of black in the ferns not 15 yards from where I shot her and I said, "Uhhhm. guys, look over here". And there she was. Dave estimated her at 240# live weight and 175# dressed, an absolute pig of a bear! I felt a bit guilty having shot a sow, but it's pretty tough to tell a bear's sex from a distance. I went out with the guide the following morning and helped him bait and check trail cameras. We went back to where I took my bear and when we checked the camera, we found it took a picture of the first bear that came in the afternoon before, only 20 or so minutes after we hauled my bear out! It also snapped a picture of my bear's final seconds before I took the shot (first picture). For those that don't think that a .270 is not enough gun for bear, I would respectfully disagree. This bear gave me the most perfect broadside shot I could have hoped for. With the illuminated reticle in the vital zone, the 150 grain Remington Corelokt took out both lungs, part of the heart and the top of the liver. A triple mortal shot! She didn't suffer and only went 15 yards from where she was hit. My only complaint is that I stuck around to have the bear processed, which didn't happen. That cost me an extra night's stay and a lot of unnecessary waiting around. Loaded the chest cavity with bags of ice, bagged her and lined the back of the Forester with a 6X8 tarp. She's now in my home town butcher's cooler waiting for processing. I still have to evaluate the skin to make sure it's worthy of a rug.

*_Rain Rain…….Go away_*
There is a reason why they call it the rainy season in Guatemala (http://www.greatsailfishing.com/). Once it starts to rain...

Rain Rain…….Go away
There is a reason why they call it the rainy season in Guatemala. Once it starts to rain it can continue, at least in the highlands, for much of the summer. This year the rain started in earnest just as the peak fishing season in Guatemala ended at the end of May – and there has been little respite ever since.
The rainy season commenced properly at the beginning of June when tropical Storm Agatha swept across Central America, bringing torrential rain that killed more than 100 people and opened a deep sinkhole in Guatemala City which reportedly swallowed up a three-storey building. The first named storm of the 2010 Pacific season dumped more than three feet of rain in parts of Guatemala, before also sweeping around to hit El Salvador and Honduras.
The huge sinkhole opened up in a northern district of Guatemala City was estimated to be approximately 100ft wide. This has become something of a recurring problem in the city, with a similar event only a few of years ago. Fingers are pointing towards a substandard drainage system.
The rain at the coast has been more intermittent, although we have seen rain most days as is normal in subtropical areas at this time of year. The benefit to fishing in Guatemala is that the flooding river washes out with it huge amounts of debris – effectively flushing out the system to sea. As the larger pieces of wood (and in some cases trees !) float offshore, they become natural holding areas for small fish and so the start of the food chain. When we are fishing for sailfish in Guatemala, we use exclusively circle hooks – and while the benefits in terms of fish mortality are well known and appreciated, one downside is that baits rigged this way are difficult to achieve hook ups with more predatory fish such as dorado and wahoo.
The sailfish and marlin are stalkers and hunters – often gathering in large packs around pods or balls of bait – and then collectively slashing into them as a team. Their instinct when pursuing baits is to follow and attack from behind using their bill to first stun the bait (or quarry) and then come back to devour it. This attack technique plays well into circle hooks, as it allows the fish time to swallow the complete bait and so for the circle hook to be effective.
Contrast this however to the instinctive attacks of mahi-mahi (dorado) that are more opportunistic – tending to be attracted to activity or commotion in the water, and then attacking the baits with a single aggressive bite from the side. This “orthogonal” attack means that the bite becomes very quick and a onetime (in most cases) event. There is no following of the bait, no circling back and no conscious swallowing of the bait – just the attack and departure. This profile frequently means a missed hookup on circle hooks.
This time of year however, we are able to target dorado around debris fields and specifically fish for them – which means we can switch over to beak or even J-type hooks that catch immediately on first bit……and so are much more effective for big dorado than the circles.
All of this combined has made the fishing in recent weeks quite spectacular despite the weather. We have been targeting and catching some big dorado on both conventional and fly – but further offshore have also been raising good numbers of sailfish.
Typically in the summertime, the bait becomes less concentrated and so the billfish are more spread out – but this summer we have observed much stronger concentrations of sailfish, and many trips have resulted in great numbers of double digit raises as well as coolers full of “meatfish” for the table.
Once we have run six or so miles offshore, the weather has cleared most days – and although you can see the dark clouds gathering over the volcanoes in the highlands, the sky offshore has remained relatively clear and the air has been dry for the majority of the fishing day.
So if you are considering a fishing trip to Guatemala, do not write-off the summer months – but if you really want predictable and consistent sailfish and marlin fishing start thinking about November – May. We are booking strongly now into the coming season, so give us a call anytime and we will be happy to make arrangements for you in the Sailfish Capital of the World.

Took a day off from chartering and took my "sons" out for a day of ground fishing. After nailing a couple real nice cod my son hooks up on something serious. 10 minutes previous we saw a big Mako cruise past so I assumed George had enticed him to eat a cod. Wrong again as 10 minutes later we reeled in and released a 65" tuna which had been tailed hooked.
Back to the purpose at hand and all I can say it was a cod bite from the GODS. Back at the dock we loaded over 200lbs of fillet into the truck and thats with 2.3 guys fishing ( I was a bit busy cutting fish so the boat wouldn't sink :D )

A full report of the best day this year can be read HERE

Even though he is a Steelers Fan my son in law Bruce can catch I have to admit!

Bruce Sweet (Sweet Dream III, Reel Sweet) came up with a great idea for a "bumper sticker." See below. It's approx. 10" x 3.5", and I gave Bruce the first two out of the printer yesterday in Gloucester before we headed for Ipswich Bay on his 35' Henriques Sweet Dream III.

No tuna joy yesterday, but dogfish happened.
