It was a pretty lousy week, weatherwise, but Old Mother Nature celebrated her weekend with a couple of great days.
Striped bass fishing could only be better if there were some bigger fish around, but based on the numbers, it would be hard to complain. All the charterboats that got out were easily able to catch their limits of fish, mostly from 10 - 15 pounds or so, as well as a good supply of bluefish. Trolling with the ‘chutes worked best, but diamond jigging was equally effective as long as the anglers had a little skill on the rods.
It would be nice if the fluke report were as good, but it isn’t. Everybody cheered when we got the new fluke regs (4 @ 19.4"), but it’s only good news if the fish are there to be caught. Right now there is only one place that has any kind of a consistent bite and that is to the south of the Elbow. Boats have tried all of the normal fluke hangouts, but to get anything they have to come back there. A couple of keepers per boat is about average, although there are some real nice sized fish being taken. As a sign of how the fishing is, some of the head boats targeting fluke have been spending time diamond jigging the bass.
The Montauk Surfmasters is now running a spring tournament, in addition to their fall-long bass tournament. It started this week and will run until the end of July. In the past the only weigh stations were the tackle shops in town but now in addition, Star Island Yacht Club and West Lake Marina are participating.
Pell’s or the Montauk Fish Dock, the fish packing place on Duryea’s Dock in the harbor, burned up this week, apparently from an electrical short.

Headed out o thirty AM to find a fleet of boat like I have never seen at this time of year already on the water. Are you kidding me. You might have thought there were millions of fish around.... shhhhh there were...... Every pass we made before the tide change we had keepers. After the tide we heading for the Sea Bass grounds and had the place to our selves or at least till people saw us tripled up.

Friday night went out on our 1st trip for squid and it was a bit slow. Everytime the captain moved we would get a few squid and then like a light switch they just shut off. Water clearity was about 5 - 6 ft down but the strong tide made things tough all around . My wife and i had about a 1/4 of a bucket of squid combined. Some of the tubes were giants 16-18 inches. Color was not a factor and the squid was more spread out. Saturday night was even slower then Friday. It was a pick with some giant size tubes again. The tide was really screaming and i think that had alot to do with the slow pick but it was a beautiful night out on the water.

5/7/12
Well, the fishing season is officially started. The LAZYBONES has been fishing everyday and a handful of charterboats have started sailing as well, although not so much during the week yet. But that will come.
The bass fishing is great, with the boats that have gone after them all catching limits, both by trolling and diamond jigging. And there are some bluefish in the mix as well. The bass are mostly all legal size with fish up to fifteen pounds or so.
The fluke are here as well, although not as good as the bass. Over the weekend the fishing continued to improve over the early part of the week and should be in top form by next weekend. For now there is a mix of shorts and legal fish, including some real doormats. The best fishing is on the south side but when weather conditions don’t allow it, there are some fish in the Rips as well. Bones had fish up to nine pounds on both Saturday and Sunday.
There was a bit of a "ooops" on Thursday night when a scallopper ran up on the beach between the lighthouse and North Bar. I guess someone fell asleep or something. A dragger took advantage of the high tide on Saturday night to haul it off.
Of course the fishing in Central America will still be hot through the spring and some of the lodges that were booked up through the winter months are starting to have some availability. Give it a thought and check it out at tropical
The springtime fishing has exploded and it really is something to see. There are small schoolie bass everywhere that you can find saltwater. Keepers size fish have been coming off the Cape Cod Bayside beaches for the last several weeks with some nice fat healthy fish up to 36 inches. Team Hook-Up! caught this fish in the picture yesterday and Capt. Rich lost another even bigger one!! Buzzards Bay has also been giving up some nice keeper Bass and the Bluefish have also started to show up in numbers. Barnstable Harbor has some nice fish with steady action and Sesuit down to the Shoals to Stoney bar has been producing keepers with umbrella rigs, Yozuri Hydro Squirts, and Mack Plugs. Speaking of mackerel the Bay is loaded with them and they are some really nice big ones. On the south side, Saquatucket Harbor gave up 5 keepers last night on chunk bait and there is a ton of schoolies in Bass River with a few bigger fish mixed in.
On the charterboat side of the company we are gearing up for our season. We will be launching ”Tuna Fever” today and the “Tammy Rose” goes into the water tomorrow. We start our tuna fishing charters on June 1st and if this year is anything like last year then June is going to be great. I only have a few days left in June so call today so you don’t miss out on this hot bluefin tuna action. If you wait for the “Bite” you will miss the “Bite”!!! Book now or you will just be reading the reports and watching my videos:BangHead: of someone else catching ‘em!!! Remember we are the only “Full-time” Bluefin Tuna Charter operation on Cape Cod. We don’t do cod or bass or bluefish…. Just Tuna!!!! If you need brain surgery do you go to a foot doctor? If you want tuna do you go with a cod guy? Book with us and experience the difference that makes us catch the number of tuna that we do. 114 tuna to the boat, with 5 fish over 73in last year. Over 1400 tuna in 7 seasons. Come on and get some. Good luck and tightlines. Capt. Eric

The bass have finally decided to eat and eat hard today. Bass up to 40 inches are being landed from the Taunton River to Providence River chasing acres of poggies today. The fluke and scup season started yesterday but with the rain conditions and wind I did not try it and have no reports, but the number of keepers allowed went up this year with the 18.5 inch length.

4/29/12
Nothing to report this week since I don’t know of any boat that sailed. But that will change this week with the fluke opening. I know a number of charterboats with trips and LAZYBONES will start sailing on Tuesday pending the arrival of some clients.
Don’t forget that to legally fish in New York waters you need to sign up for the states registry. It’s not a license, but amounts to the same thing, and it doesn’t cost anything. You can get it at https://nyfgisales.appsolgrp.com/fgnyia/html/index.jsp When you get to the site it looks like you will have to pay, but at the end it says that the fee is $0.
Last month the MBCA was informed by the Coast Guard that they will be cracking down on small vessels carrying passengers for hire that are not built to Coast Guard specs. This will mostly apply to the fly boats but something else might come into play and that is boats taking charters without licensed captains. Some of the light tackle boats are unlicensed but get by with a New York State guides license that covers them in state waters. Renewing a captain’s license has gotten a little dicey over the last couple of years, mainly due to the medical section of the forms. I’ve been going through it myself for a couple of months now, having to go to three different medical specialists to prove that past problems, going back as far as twelve years, have been managed satisfactorily. I know one captain who spent a year getting his ticket renewed over one medication he was on. I know of a couple of others who were turned down. One was considering retiring anyway, but the other probably would have continued working. I know that I would never ask a captain about his license status because I don’t want to find out someone is working without it.
Of course the fishing in Central America will still be hot through the spring and some of the lodges that were booked up through the winter months are starting to have some availability. Give it a thought and check it out at tropical
If you need any other information about fishing in Montauk check out montauk
Not sure if that means they are prego already or just full of eggs and awaiting fertilization or what? Maybe all females have eggs this time of year?
