10/25 – 40th Birthday RIPDOG Style

The crew for this one was Capt. Scott Clay, Capt. Jim O'Brien, Brian Kelly a.k.a. Pickles (40th Birthday Boy), and as always…ME!

So the plan was pretty simple….Set out and catch a BlueFin Tuna for our friend's 40th birthday celebration. We got a good report late in the day from our dockmate that the Regal Sword was holding a lot of life on Friday and there was a good afternoon bite. It’s always nice to get intel like that especially this time of the year. Thanks again Larry and nice work grabbing a few fish late in the day out there…

So we left Falmouth Harbor at 0430 and were on the tuna grounds just after 0700. We knew that with the small weather window, it was very important to get on the fish quickly and immediately upon arrival things looked very promising. The sky was orange and there were big gannets, shearwaters, and some terns doing their thing. We began spotting some whales and just as we were approaching our numbers I see busting Tuna on the horizon!

The crew quickly sprang into action and deployed a spread of 4 bars, 2 ballyhoo way back on both sides and we put a hoo on a planer down the middle…

Within 15 minutes of trolling we had 3 fish up at the same time. They all crashed the spreader bars and not one of them came tight….This was a bit of a bummer, actually it was a real kick in the you know what, because we knew it was gonna be a short trip…

So we pressed on after a quick check of the spread, and in about another 30 minutes or so we had another big swing and a miss on the black bar….So we started the day 0 for 4! Not very good…

I still had a good feeling with the amount of life that was around though, but at this point it was blowing a steady 15 knots out of the SE and the seas were beginning to grow to consistent 4 footers. Our time was running out and we still needed to get the birthday boy on a fish….So with a small location adjustment about 2 miles to the south, we found another real good body of life with porpoises, whales and birds galore….

We quickly put the spread out again in the new area and within 15 minutes the left long ballyhoo dressed with a blue and white ilander gets crushed and ran off hard….zzzzzzzzzzzzz…….I grabbed the rod while the birthday boy got the belt on…Its always fun to pick up the rod and feel all the line being ripped off the spool before you pass it to the angler. I looked at Pickles before I made the hand off and said…”have fun with this one buddy”….LOL…After about 45 minutes of battling this stubborn fish he finally got the leader in Scotty’s hand and I sank the gaff with a precision head shot! Fish taped out right 60 inches and we were all surprised that he was not bigger after seeing how hard he fought on an Accurate 80. One fat feisty Tuna and One tired 40 year old Man…Mission accomplished….

At this point it was 1030 so we still had a little time. The spread went back out and very quickly the right long black bar got hammered and sent for a ride….This time it was Capt. Clay’s turn to do battle….After a nice little 30 minute fight Scott had the leader in my hand and this fish was dragged through the door, measured at 58 inches, tagged and shipped on his way!

We did attempt to quickly put the spread back out for one more shot, but we knew we were up against the weather as the wind was beginning to howl and we had a long clip back to Falmouth….At 1145 we decided to pull the spread and head for the barn before things got worse…

All in all it was just an awesome day on the water spent with a great crew. The water temp was 53 degrees and there was still tons of life. This bite should hold for at least another month or so…..

Thanks again for everything Scotty and Happy 40th Birthday Pickles. I hope you had as much fun as I did!! Man, I love Tuna fishing

Good Luck and be safe everyone

Nice Work RIPDOG

Yo Scotty,

why is it that pretty boy Droney is always in the fish photos??? You do ALL the work, and he gets all the accolades....jeez.

Seriously though, you guys are sure in the game each and every time the RIPDOG leaves the dock. You guys take it seriously, and the efforts show in your results. Sweet job once again.

Skippa Dom?????? WTF? Bro...LOL.....When Scotty's fish hit the deck I asked him if wanted to grab a quick picture but I think he was busy chewing on one of those "retard sandwiches" or something because he said..."Nah lets just get him back as quickly as possible".....Responsible Capt. I guess

On another note, I am hearing rumblings of possibly one last late season Canyon run .....Big shocker here....I am IN!

Swordman....calling swordman....GregO give me a call to talk about this one! I think we just might be able to get you some revenge from the last trip..

Jolly Mon
