8/23 Miami Mahi Mahi Report

Just got back from a 4 day bachelor party blowout down in South Beach…..We did manage to squeeze in a day of sport fishing while we were down there with Miss Britt Charters out of Coconut Grove.

Here’s how the day went down…..After pulling back to back all nighters on Thurs and Friday night, it was finally time to get serious and do some fishing. At 0530 on Saturday morning I met the other 5 maniacs in the lobby of the hotel. None of which had slept yet. I made sure everyone loaded up on Dramamine and off we went…

We arrived at the boat at 0700 and met Capt. Avery and the two mates Jeff and Nick. 5 minutes later we were on our way out of the harbor. I quickly realized that this boat was truly something special. A 43 foot custom sport fish with full walk around capabilities, over 60 rod holders, a custom bait well with window and a full Marlin tower helm station. Just a sick, sick rig.

The first stop was at one of the channel markers just outside the inlet. We quickly loaded up on a few species of bait fish using sabiki rigs. 20 minutes later with a full live well, we motored towards the gulf stream in search of

The plan was basically to sight fish for them. Upon spotting them, we would pitch our live baits using spinning gear. When we arrived into the Blue water we had schools of flying fish leaping through the air all over the place. It wasn’t long before we spotted our first school of do-do’s swimming around a pot. We began the day with a nice flurry of 5 10-12lbers which was a nice warm up for things to come…..

The rest of the day we drove the stream looking for weed lines, floating debris or frigate birds hovering above. Every time we found one or two birds there were always Mahi under them. Each time we pulled 5-7 fish out of each school before we moved on…

The last flurry of the day was just amazing. We managed to hook and land a female that was in the mid 20lb class and two males that were in the mid 30lb class.

Final tally was 35 Dorado all caught with live bait and spinning gear. The crew of the Miss Britt worked their butts off for us the entire day. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to do serious fishing aboard a world class fishing machine. I really can’t say enough good things about the Capt. and mates. All 3 of them were tremendous. Check them out if you're ever in the area...

That night we had the hotel prepare us the fish. First we had a fried Mahi appetizer served with a Chipolte Mayo dipping sauce. Then the main course was Blackened Mahi with Mango Salsa over risotto rice and mixed vegetable. Unreal!!

rod holders

I always say you can never have enough rod holders.....However, after seeing this rig, I think over 60 will suffice. Cool stuff!

Nice post (as always!) Brian!! Great pics too. A 30 lb Mahi - what a tremendous fish Sounds like a great day - although I hope all that boozin' didn't come back and wreck anybody .

Here's a question - what does one do with 60 rod holders and only 6 folks fishing? I know it gets tough when 2 or 3 rods go off at one time - what do you do when you have 10 or 15 go off? Hmmmmm.......

Anyway, thanks for the read.

Sounds like a fun weekend!

I notice you left out all the details from BEFORE the fishing trip......other than that it was back to back all-nighters......

You dont recognize that guy from the second picture holding the big dorado wearing the visor? That's my buddy Rob. When that 10 walked into the shower to rinse herself off he threw sand all over himself and ran over to the shower to get a closer look...LOL....I had to snap a shot
