| The Thresher weighed 952 lbs. and was not captured under IGFA standards (we were clearing lines at the end of night fishing and want to set up for morning trolling when it looked like a swordy whacked the last bait down...I told Marlin Magic II co-captain Jason Holtz to feed the swordy the bait, which he did and we got a solid hook up. Unfortunately, it wasn't a Swordy, but a very large Thresher that began a very tentative fight compared to what we ususally get out of them. It soon turned into a heavy drag game of cat and mouse that saw the fish peel off one to two hunderd yards of line more than a dozen times, each time seemingly getting stronger... After a 2.3/4 hr fight the fish came up looking very spent. John patterson (owner of Marlin Magic II) fought the fish for roughly two hours and 15 minutes before he handed off the rod Dr. Bill Rhee to share in the capture. John knew we could not apply for a record based on how we hooked the fish, but is really a team player and wanted Bill to get in on the action (That and he had been pulling on a near grander Thresher for 2.25 hours on stand up with 45 lbs. of drag and was starting to feel it). JP really went to war with the fish from the start and really took a lot energy out of the fish before handing it off... We elected to take the Thresher because it was in bad shape and didn't look like it would make it. We were estimating it at 650 based on the other fish we had released over the last month. When it was lifted it out the water we started to realize that this fish was much bigger and it's final weight proved that out when it crushed the scale at 952 lbs. 150 lbs. larger than the all tackle world record and 123 lbs. larger than the Hawaii state record, which this fish will now become. Captain Marlin Parker has a history for catching fish that exceed world records, in 1990 he captured a 1400 lb. Blue Marlin that exceeded the world record by 24 lbs. They did not apply for an IGFA record because the angler needed assistance on that fish... Once again great job by the captains and crew, Marlin Parker & Jason Holtz and Carol Lynne. More Details are forth coming on this...Mahalo to all the people who taught us and helped us achieve this goal; Kerwin Masunauga, Weston and Newton Leslie, Mark Loera, Kevin Nakamaru (current state record holder @ 829 lbs.), Carlton Arai, Sam Choy Jr., Allan Bakke and especially Frank Mundus. __________________ | ||
