| BACK FROM THE TAILS 9/2-3/07 Headed out on Sunday to the tails. Left the dock at 9am and stopped at Montauk for some fuel and bait. at about 40 miles out we found a huge temp break with a couple of other boats working the area so we put the lines in and worked the area hard for about 30minutes then we reeled up and headed for the tails stopped about 6 miles before the flats and just as we entered about a mile before the tails we see a nice size mako about 200pounds just cruising on top of the surface. so we quickly reeled up the spread and threw a shark rig out in front of him with a couple of sardines on the hook dunked in bunker oil but he would not take it he stayed on top for about 30 minutes then went down deep and were not able to find him so we put the trolling spread back in and made are way down to the tails trolled all threw the tails and into the deep with out a bite so we headed west. right when we got about 5-6miles out away from the tails where the fleet wasn't we started to see tons of life whales and porpoise so we stayed around the whales for a while and and just as we were hoping for the center way back green machine with a bird starts to scream and i mean scream the 70 is just ripping and before we could pick the rod the line goes slack the line had broken because of to much tension on the line (possible big eye) or what ever it was it was big so we stayed in the area and trolled some more with out a touch we. Tied up in the same area that we had the big fish on before and where all the porpoise and whales were. We put the lines in for the chunk at about 7:30pm and had mahi all over the boat at first.Had porpoise and tons of bait and squid around the boat at about 1am then at about 1:30am the 30 that had a sardine on 60 fluro down 50 feet goes screaming get the nice 80pound class yellow in the boat with quite a fight that he was giving hit him in the head with the gaff and the thing freaked a $hit and almost pulled me over if it wasn't for my new jigging rod in the rod holder that stopped me from going in the ocean but we got it in the boat but onforteintly the new jigging rod was not ok the rod but broke in half completely. We then put the lines in immediately and had some hits on hammered diamond jigs down 50-60feet nothing then twenty minutes later a rod goes off a little. It ended up being a big bull mahi 20pounds plus. Put the lines back in and waited then around 2:30am-3:00am we get a hit on a sardine 50 feet down but missed the hook. 20minutes later we get another hit down 50 feet on a sardine and land a nice 40 pound yellow. about 40 minutes later we spot a nice size shark that was swimming around the boat we weren't able to tell what it was it didn't look like a blue shark most likely a mako an hour later he comes back for a short time then leaves and didn't see him again. Got on the troll at day break and trolled the area for a while and got one Albie. then wee headed east to the east wall of the tails and hook up 3 albies and landed all three. put the lines back in and trolled another 30 minutes then headed north for home because the winds were supposed to pick up. total count for the trip was 2 yellows one pushing 80pounds, 4 albies in the 50pound range, and 2 nice size mahi one being a nice bull. had a good time and finally had a little action at night. will hopefully run this Wednesday, Thursday again to the canyons. depending on weather and being able to miss some school up to the boss(mom). heres some pics ![]() ![]() tight linzzzzz Blake W.
