Coastal canyon report 8/29-8/30

Tails West to Middle Grounds

Headed out 8/29-8/30 to the area of the tails. Trolled from 300 feet in, found plenty of life 4 miles north of the tip, lots of birds and a few big whales. Had 2 longfin around 3 pm, and then the skippies showed, en masse, so we knew that was our area. Hammered the area, and went 1 for 3 on big yellows, the one we landed went 90 pounds, other two tangled and both snapped off(two bars gone, ouch) That was it unfortunately, till the next morning as we had no action at night at all, drifting out around 500 fathoms, then back up around 900 feet in late morning, only one mystery fish that spit the hook around 4 am after a brief 5 minute tussle.

Back up on the troll in the morning, we immediately scored a nice double of 70 pound yellowfin, then a half hour later a single albie that took the WWB green machine. Very cslow till 9:00 am, was ready to call it quits, when the port close 9 inch squid bar(root beer) went screaming away, and instantly 2 more piled on, both on bars(green, another rootbeer) These fish were BIG, but unfortunately the clip on the starboard side got hung up, and popped 1 off right away. Second fish parted the line after 15 minutes?? so we carefully worked the last one in, and darted a 174 pound bigeye 35 minutes later. As we were retrieving the last "broken" line, it felt like we had something on the line, and sure enough, the bar came back, minus the chase bait with the hook. Snap swivel was destroyed, and opened up! Hate losing a fish to gear failure.

Slow trip except for a few brief moments on the troll. Final tally was 0 for 1 on the night chunk, on the troll 1cfor 1 on penguins, 3 for 5 on YellowFin Tuna, 1 for 3 on Big Eye.
