I should have known, after last weeks cancellation..... The same group who cancelled early Thur. morning last week, did the same thing to me, only at 3:30 PM this week. ![]() I had gotten a deposit, and retained it after last weeks short notice, but then against my better judgement let the customer re apply said deposit for this week, since he booked a longer extended day trip. Needless to say after this last call, I asked that this gent find another outfit for his fishing needs. ![]() So, I have 6 buckets of prime bunker chum, a nice flat of horse mackeral, and 4 fresh blues already waiting for their release into my slick tommorrow. I need 2 willing anglers looking to hunt some makos and or threshers with me tommorrow. Also plannjing on trolling a bit for BlueFin Tuna. Planning on leaving at 5:30 am, who's in?????? ![]()

My wife decided yesterday that she wanted to re-design our downstairs bathroom so i just gutted it last night and spent the better part of today putting up sheetrock and spackling. I wish this was any other day or I would be there as I was home all this week DAMN IT, this means you'll hang a slob, I have that feeling. its really fishy outside | ||

Had a very strange situation today at the dock. I had my friend Dan and his neighbor Pete, and two unexpected guests all waiting anxiously as I arrived late at 5:15. The 2 mystery guests were from the charter I was supposed to have. Evidently, the gent who booked the charter and cancelled had left them a message on a phone they did not check....needless to say, they were sumthin pissed....until I let em on to fish with us. They were also expecting the charter to be paid for, but were eager to fish, so a check sufficed for me. Met two pretty cool guys from Wilton CT, Bob and Henry, and they each got to pull on a fish. The fog was very thick, so 18 knots was all I could do. Blasted all the way past Tuna Ridge to the only water I could see on the sat shot from that night, where I was looking to find a 64-66 degree break. Never found the break, but did have a pod of dolphin working the surface, and lots of bait down in 60 feet of water...turned out to be dogfish, and we got covered up as I brought the deep bait back in after 10 minutes when we noticed the line "jiggling". Moved south about 3 miles to a touch deeper water, and set up the slick again. Slow for the first 3 hours, until around 10:30 the first blue dog showed, and we quickly baited him on a 30 and released him with a tag. As we were preparing to re bait, the short rod doubled over, but no drag came off. Turned out to be a very small female mako, which we quickly unwound from the leader, tagged, and let go. Not more than 4 or 5 minutes later, the deep rod goes screaming, Dan waits a few seconds, then comes up out of his shoes on 3 quick sets, and a nice mako goes airborne seconds after the rod comes tight. Fought the fish rather quickly, as it was on an 80, but he did do some serious tailwalking. Got him boatside, measured him up, and stuck the iron in his back. Game over, 71 inch male, although very skinny. As we are bleeding him out while hes tailed off, the mid bait which has just been re set goes screaming, and we are into what we think to be a huge fish. Dumps half a spool on a 50, then settles in, but never goes deep. Being wary, I goose the boat forward as he comes closer, only to find a pectoral hooked blue dog of around 300 plus pounds, which goes bat chit when he sees the boat, and beats the hell out of our new friend Henry for the next 40 minutes, until he finally tires. Fish had a 9.4' FL, so well over 300, and tagged and successful release. Had a visitor from CT, pull in less than 1/4 mile away, and set up shop, much to our chagrin....Not more than a half hour into it, we l;ook over to see an airborne mako and scrambling in their cockpit. Fish looked pretty good, but a few minutes later we see the rod snap up....fish off. Karma got em ![]() Not much activity till around 1:30, when another mako pup comes charging through the slick, and gets all wound up in the short bait, but as we get him closer, we notice the hook isn't in him. Of course as we almost get him unwound, the hook snags his face, and another 15 minutes is spent untangling the poor sucker. Tagged him too, a male of around maybe 40 pounds. Finished out the drift, which picked up nicely after noon, when the fog lifted and the wind steadily increased. Had one other runoff thast spit hook around 2:30, packed it in, and headed to the barn. Boat scale had the mako at 155, very light for such a long fish. Talked with a boat who hooked up to a giant in the SW corner of the mudhole, broke him off after 3 hours. Saw no surface activity whatsoever on the ride in. Water temp was a steady 66.5-66.8 degrees, had nice blue water at start of drift, ended up in clean green water at the end. Too bad nobody from NBS could make it out with me.....Keep your eyes peeled though, I have a light week after Labor day.... ![]()
