| Harpoon reaches alot farther and deeper. I worked on a swordfish stick boat in the 70's. The iron on the stick was soft so when the fish rolled it would'nt lever out the lilly/dart. Swords are very soft, tuna and sharks are pretty hard. Stay away from the gills on all of them. Paint paddle can replace the tape | ||

Remember the shank is designed to bend as stated when the fish rolls. Do not sharpen dart lake a razor. It will penatrate the fish, just make sure it has a good point so that it will go in deep and toggle. I use a dowel to hold my line and it has been there a few years holding up well. A good harpooner once told me to always put a little grease (PAM) on the end of the shaft to make sure the dart pulls away from the shank. Also, don't forget the tag line and is anyone still using wooden sticks wrapped with sheet lead these days? This is what I stuck my first tow fish withoff NBPT back in 1976 off of Ipswich Bay? Don, I bet you had a permit for that skiff you sly fox didn't you? There sure were alot of skiffs with permits coming in around the breakwater with a single person on board. The skiff (sleigh ride) would wear out the fish and no one worried about chaffe as we were all using wire. Dave | ||

| I fished with a guy and he rigged his poon so tight there was no slack to get the iron out of the fish. He forgot the grease too,all rusted together. That fish was a messy situation!! Last year I almost forgot the grease/lube, all I had on the boat was the fat in the fry pan after cooking burger. I used it , this year going thru gear I found lilly with the fat still in the little socket. My first poon was wood li ke on the sword fish boat only shorter and yes I did wrap lead around it. With that wood poon I threw and hit a hooked GBFT on the surface at what seemed 20 ft, can't remember leader length. Hit 'em right where I was aiming. I don't know if I could do that with the metal one I have now, not the same balance or grip. Don- Now I don't mean to be nosey but what's the device laying atop engine box, looks like it's made of stainless? | ||
