I usually don't post much but feel I must after today. We were heading out tot he canyons for an overnight and two day troll on the BANG-GA (27 vector cc). I'm sure some of you have seen this boat taking fish as we do OK. My Grady is scheduled for a dive trip to Block this weekend with my boat partner. Anyway... 4 am we start loading, engines idling and myself and one other go to load ice and grab some more gear while the owner & our friend stow gear. I am coming from the Grady one dock away when "KA-BOOM"!!! I look over and the BANG-GA is engulfed in flames. I run back to the Grady to grab my extinguisher & yell to Capt. Bruce (my neighbor & best bass angler on the planet) that there's a fire. Technically I am one dock away but the Bang-Ga is at a private marina which as the crow flies is 100 yards but seems like a mile after moving through brush & parking lots. The fire is still burning this whole time & I see my guys fighting it with all they have. I finally get there and its just about out. They dump my bottle on the fire as well and it is finally extinguished. Capt. Bruce with full charter swings by on the boat to check up on us & we let him know we look OK. A guy on the other dock has called 911. $ fire trucks with 3 cruisers get there in 5-7 minutes which was an awesome response time! The scary part of this story is that by the time I got there they had gone through 3 ABC bottles and were on the dock hose before we put the 4th and final bottle on the fire!!! This fire was a one motor fire (twin 250s). They are 2003 Ficht's which were supposed to have gotten past all the Coast Guard recalls. The 3rd bottle wasn't even on the boat & was located in the dock box! Nobody was hurt and I can't believe it took so much to put that fire out. What if it was 10 minutes later & we were off the dock with only the two bottles on board? Worse yet, in the canyons? Or underway at 40 mph? I know everyone is careful & safety is always top of mind but please check your extinguishers and make sure you have at least 2 BIG mothers or a minimum of 4 of the smaller kind. Lastly, rethink the motors you select and check the fuel lines! We still don't know what the &*^% happened other than it was a high pressure fuel leak that blew the hood off the motor after detonation with a fireball 15' high and 10' around in the water! Well wishes to the Bang-Ga and I hope he gets a fair deal from the adjuster! Last edited by goin deeper; 08-08-2008 at 10:12 PM. Reason: spelling!!!!!!!

| Holy sheepshit...... LUCKY! Always a blessing when it happens at or near the dock! But point well taken! Good reason to carry a LIFE RAFT wherever you go, NOT just offshore! ![]() Hope the owner of the BANG GA makes out well......those older FICHTS had some issues, for sure......that one just plain old sucks.

| Even more important than the number of bottles is their location. If you are in the cabin when the engine explodes or catches , do you have enough to fight the fire and escape? Remember the coast guard regs. are bare minimum. When I finally finish my boat for next year it will have 3 times the reccomended bot6tles on board. ![]() | ||

| Very scary, I have heard of this before on this model engine. You had a hard time putting out the flames, was the engine still running or key in the on position? If yes it was pumping fuel to the fire the whole time.Glad to see every one was ok.

| Good to hear everyone is OK. I'll talk to you guys soon! That would have been real ugly if it didn't happen at the dock. Tell DJ that was a helluva way to get a new motor!

Turned the key off right away which stopped the flow but there was so much gas from that high pressure system it made it difficult
