Updating some of our reels for this season. I am stuck between two reels and wondering if anyone had any experience with either What Im using it for: Shark/Tuna Alutecnos 50w-2speed or AVET ES 50w 2 speed I had the pleasure of using alutecnos 20's down in Miami when I was sailfishing and I fell in love with them. They felt and looked like the best reels Ive had in my hands. I normally fish Shimano but I wanted to upgrade. Your thoughts on both are greatly appreciated Here are the specs on both Avet Pro EX 50/2 speed Two Speed Model, Gear Ratio H3.2:1, L1.3:1 Lever Drag control system. 50 lb Max Drag on Strike with Free Spool. All stainless steel ball bearings and stainless steel components. AveDrag dual caliper drag washers with titanium brake disk. Handle knob with oversized grip. Harness lugs. Alutecnos 50w/2 speed Super positive and smooth shifting system. Infinite anti-reverse. Channel and grooved safety stopers on full and free spool. 5 ball races. Stainless steel gears. Latest carbon composite drag washer virtually eliminating "stick-slip". All aluminium parts have been buffed, ultrasonically cleaned, polished and anodized . Entirely CNC machined from solid bars. All screws are in aisi 316 stainless steel. Impressive 4 bolt rod bracing design. Line Capacity: 975 yards of 50# Gear Ratio: High 3.3 to 1. Low 1.7 to 1. Weight: 2070 grams. Thoughts? | ||

| Don't mean to pry, but what do those cost? I currently use only 900H Diawa's and i've gotten 400 pound sharks no problem. They are cheap and handle it, But I'd like to get a 2 speed if I could afford it. Armand | ||

| Also curious what the cost is..... Penn 50 VSW (2-speeds) can be gotten for under $500. Love mine, smooth as silk. I know the smaller Penns have gotten a bad rap lately, but these can't be included.......I have many smaller and more inexpensive Penns that I will be changing soon.......but I plan on having these 50's a long time. Nice lookin reels tho! (Maybe cost isn't an issue?)

| no doubt the alutecnos reels are beautiful. i am also an avet fan...but i personally do not think either is really an upgrade over a tiagra. both are going to have more drag than a tiagra 50, but unless you are fishing w/braid, you can't use more than ~30lbs of strike drag on a 50 anyway (unless you don't mind a lot of breakoffs!) because the strongest mono you can put on a 50w is 80lb/500yd. now, if you are planning on going after giants, then, yes the avet w/its extra drag & loaded up w/135lb braid, things can get interesting fast. the avet 50 trx is just sick. i personally would not be willing to fight a fish standup with 100lbs of drag though (!)...maybe i'm just ignorant, but it just seems 100% ridiculous to think anyone could fight a fish standup w/that much drag. if you're not going after giants, and you are going to load your 50w w/80lb mono like most of us, then the extra drag really isn't needed. but, if you're replacing your tackle because it's worn out (never heard of a recreational tiagra being worn out before), then i think either the avet or the alutecnos have more 'bling' than the tiagra, with the alutecnos getting the nod for italian design/wow factor and the avet being cool because they are just about the only reels still being made in USA. oh, and they both are top notch. i have tiagras and avets and i would say the tiagras are better at keeping the salt out of the insides. during routine maintenance, even after one season, the avets had evidence of salt getting in (these are the LX reels, different than the ones you're looking at). the grease did its job protecting the components, but i would say preventitive maintenance on the avets is more important than on the tiagras (which are as bullet proof a reel as you will find). that said, i just bought two new reels and they were...avets. i decided i wanted something lighter than the 50w so i opted for 30w size reels and will load them w/80lb braid. they will have the same drag settings & slightly more line capacity (due to the braid) as the tiagra 50w but are smaller & lighter. tuna & shark is a wide category...if you are fishing tournaments and/or commercial, you size your gear for that giant fish that you must land. i think when you're just recreational, you size it so you're not outgunning your fish/you're not just winching in 95% of the fish you catch...of course that means that eventually you will probably get spooled and that's the trade off. good luck. | ||

| Thanks for the reply, I am a rec fisherman but I also do some tournaments as well. With that said I was upgrading from a set of shimano TLD50lrs 2 speeds. graphite body. I fish for shark alot and wanted to upgrade. I would agree with you that the Avets are sick and I have gven thought to purchasing the avet trex 30 instead of either of them becuase of size. However I do go and fish for yellowfins off Puerto Vallarta and some pretty large sharks so I decided the 50 would probably be the best choice. The plan is to load it up with Jerry brown hollowcore and then splicing 80 mono to gain extra capacity. I was as much interested in the bling of the alutecnos but the feel. I fished in Miami with thier smaller reels and they felt awesome. I can get one pretty close to the cost of an avet 50w 2 speed so i dont mind paying alittle extra if this is a long term deal | ||

| the 30trex is way overkill for 80lb mono, pure and simple. it's designed for 135lb hollow core imo. normal avet 30w can give 80lb line all the drag it can handle. if you are going with 80lb mono, then a 50w either tiagra, alutecnos or avet is going to be great. the only reason i can think to go to braid w/80lb mono topshot is to get into something smaller, i.e. a 50 (not wide) or a 30w. i suppose the extra 80lb line on the 50w couldn't hurt, but if the big guy has taken 500 yards with all the drag 80lb line can handle, what are the odds the extra couple hundred are going to stop him? not saying it can't happen, just saying it isn't likely in my mind. there's 1 million scenarios you can try to gear up for, i'm saying you just have to go w/the most likely. bottom line, both the avets and alutecnos reels kick butt. | ||

| haven't used the avets offshore reels, (still stuck on my very serviceable penns) but i find my inshore avet reels (4 of them) to be very impressive with performance & BLING after 2 seasons of trice weekly use. (during our northeast season) . do what feels good, i took some abuse for the price i paid for my avets, but if they can't understand then they can't understand!! imho cap'n mick | ||
