New Sharks added

Scientists add shark species to endangered list
By Jeremy LovellThu Feb 22, 11:08 AM ET

Scientists added several species of deep sea sharks on Thursday to the World Conservation Union's (IUCN) endangered Red List due to overfishing.
At a meeting in Oxford, England, the scientists listed all three species of thresher sharks -- known for their scythe-like tails -- as "vulnerable globally," and moved the shortfin mako to "vulnerable today" from "near threatened."
"The qualities of pelagic sharks -- fast, powerful, wide-ranging -- too often lead to a misperception that they are resilient to fishing pressure," said Sarah Fowler of the IUCN's Shark Specialist Group.
"This week, leading shark scientists from around the world highlighted the vulnerability of these species to overfishing and concluded that several species are now threatened with extinction on a global scale," she added.
The scientists decided that the blue shark, the world's most abundant and heavily fished pelagic shark, should remain in the "near threatened" category despite a decline in numbers of 50-70 percent in the North Atlantic and scant conservation measures.
Scientists later added the semi-pelagic scalloped hammerhead shark to the "endangered" category, while the pelagic stingray was put in the "least concern" category which is still part of the IUCN's Red List.
The Red List categories range from "extinct" to "not evaluated."
Pelagic sharks are taken unintentionally in high seas during swordfish and tuna fishing, and increasingly targeted as new markets develop for their meat and demand grows for their fins.
Bans on shark finning -- slicing off a shark's fins -- have been adopted for most international waters, but standards of enforcement are low, IUCN said.
"Despite mounting threats and evidence of decline, there are no international catch limits for pelagic sharks," said Sonja Fordham, Shark Alliance's policy director.
"The workshop results underscore the urgent need for international fishery commissions to limit fishing for these vulnerable species and strengthen regulations on the wasteful practice of finning," she added.
She said the hammerhead was among the most endangered species from shark finning because their meat had very low value but their fins were highly prized for the Asian delicacy shark-fin soup.

Hot new charter fishery opens in RI!!!!

February 25, 2007 A.P. News

metro sportstaff writer Freddy "meathooks" Piniero

Newport, RI

Coastal Charters Sportfishing annouced its plans to offer its customers a new "spring iron-man's freezer special".......

Capt. "dogfish" Dom relates his groundbreaking plan to bolster re-interest in the troubled recreational fishing realm by offering 24 hour, non stop fishing, guaranteed to fill your freezer and provide lasting memories for years to come, just "bring your camera" he says.

Anglers are faced with a current ban on most popular species here in the Northeast, so Cap. "dogfish" found what he believes to be the only viable trip plan to get any legal catch for not only great action, but many a fine meal later on.

The trip starts in historic Newport Harbor at 8pm, just after dark, where you board the vessel and make the grueling 4 minute steam to the fishing grounds. After getting the boat over the "hole", the underwater light goes on, and the rapid, non stop action begins. Anglers battle it out with 2 or 3 of these inshore demons at a time, filling their coolers as fast as possible during the spurts, and relaxing in between the pods which show regularly throughout the night. Be sure to bring your foul weather gear, as these little buggers can get messy! Trash bags available for excess catch or double as a poncho for those pikers out there at minimal cost. Often anglers can snare a few robin fish, an added bonus with your jigging pleasure.!!

Anglers fish till morning, taking all the squid they want, it being one of the very few bastions of relief for the opressed meat fisherman, then its back to the dock for a quick wash down with the high powered raw water dock side showers, a great amenity provided free of charge!

A quick breakfast on the steam to the "offshore" grounds passes the time for the anxious angler, and 15 miutes later the boat sets up at world reknowned "Brenton Reef", home of the daytime portions quarry. With much skill and knowledge, the crew gets you anchored over the "honey hole" , those magical spots only expert guides can find, where anglers will enjoy non stop action on the delicious, abundant, aggressive, and vicious "choggo", or "cunner", commonly known to our dedicated metro sports page readers as "bergalls". Again, the occasional robin fish can spice up the catch, and will provide again a chance to catch unlimited amounts of tasty ocean critters to enjoy as a seafood snack throughout the year.....

And to top it all off, when the boat is "pinned" to the gunnels with fish, the day is followed up with a shot at the fearsome, inshore terrors, affectionately known as the "doggie", who are just starting to show up in force to the fishing grounds during the spring run. These predators of the deep are a fierce fight on appropriate tackle, just beware....the swarms that sometimes show can be addicting, as they get so angry they are known to follow hooked brethern to the surface, devouring him along the way. The unbelieveable action they provide is a short lived, as your arms quickly tire from the bruising battles particular to this beloved inshore shark. You arrive back at the dock just after sunset, where your daunting task of loading your 3 cooolers of squid and 4 garbage bags of bergies begins....not to mention the sure to follow, day- after tradition of the "cut- party interactive, fish-fry and calimari fest". Just bring the beers, this fishin addict will be there!

This trip can be enjoyed by seasoned anglers and googins alike, and from the looks of the new regs in place, the only show in town.....
We recommend making your reservations early, as the stir this new trip has created will make it difficult to get your place at the rail. Fare will be a very value effective $49.99 per man, which includes a rod, a squid jig, and all the clam bellies you can handle. Packing of your catch extra, and don't forget to tip your crew, they work hard to clean up after you leave. Trips run from early april through late may, when its dogfish trips, 24 seven, once they take over the grounds in numbers by early June. Trip popularity could see a fall and early winter fishery too, the captain added.

Capt. Dogfish Dom thinks other charter operators will be struggling to catch up, but should see similar trips offered in your home waters of the Northern Atlantic very soon. This reporter sure can't wait....
